Evening Reading
by Steve Gibson, Feb 19, 2008 6:12pm PSTSo as some of you have probably noticed we decided to list off the categories we've
been using next to the news items now and call them tags. We'll probably add a few more
tools/toys for messing with categories down the road. We'll see how these things go. The
internet scares me.
- Digital TV under
fire
- Florida considering
evolution
- Blu-Ray victory means
$
- Sex predators are

- More Wolverine

As for the the videogame news around these parts for today:
Lastly, a few random tags you may find interesting are things like href="http://www.shacknews.com/tag.x/Demo">Demo href="http://www.shacknews.com/tag.x/Xbox+Live+Arcade">XBox Live Arcade href="http://www.shacknews.com/tag.x/Blu-Ray">Blu-Ray href="http://www.shacknews.com/tag.x/Digital+Distribution">Digital Distribution href="http://www.shacknews.com/tag.x/Buyout">Buyout href="http://www.shacknews.com/tag.x/Trailer">Trailer

- Humans are apparently filled with 55 gals of blood stored at 50psi.
Man, what a great book. Seriously awesome. I think I'm in love with the American fantasy epic -- American Gods was every bit as wonderful. Now I just gotta decide what to read next. Do I go back to The Dark Tower and get back on track with Wolves of Calla? Do I read Hearts in Atlantis? Or do I read some poetry and short stories to recharge...
Oh and Tom Cullen is the best goddamned character ever.

kudos to lodit for the photoshop, it was mentioned before last time my list was brought up, but that was a good execution (pun...)
re: the list.... whatever, yea, juvenile probably, but so were the original threads which caused me to stick those names on there - and to lakren who originally made me start the damn thing with following me into every thread giving me shit about selling Wii's back in '06. A bit sensitive of a subject since I was kinda forced into doing it to give my daughter a good christmas and to feed her. Even after explaining it to lakren in SMs & a few threads he still continued, list of people I won't help in threads was born. (just an explanation, don't really want to continue that crap....)
...dropping the subject after this thread and im deleting the list - whatever... [or just leave it for shits and grins¿?]
for the people that left genuine messages, I appreciate them very much, as always. thank you, really.
p.s. Museum & the Butterfly exhibit were awesome, we stayed 5 hours! I was exhausted... then drove from there to Incredible Pizza for her real party. holy crap, im about to fall over. it was a great day, im glad I wasn't here to start defending myself in that shitstorm....

Awhile ago dahanese and the guys over at Played (the podcast you all listen to) held a contest to win Jasons gaming crap. Well.. I threw something together in half an hour and I won for some unholy reason. Well, they said I won and then dahanese moved and then she forgot that I won and then she sent out other prizes and then the Bioshock gate happened and she forgot again and then then I reminded her and today I came home to a 55 pound box. 55 FUCKING POUNDS!! I thought for sure that Chris Remo had killed a hobo and sent the remains to me: www.switchinggearsgame.com/temporary/contest/IMG_2625.jpg
Well.. no. It really was Jasons gaming crap. And it filled up a giant fucking box of doom. Here. My winnings, let me show you them:
Me and the wife had just opened the box and by this time her jaw hit the floor and my pants got really, really tight.

The first thing I pull out are two medium sized Darkness tshirts:
www.switchinggearsgame.com/temporary/contest/IMG_2599.JPG
Next up, comic books, and throughout the box there were so many comics that the final stack is a fucking foot high! Everything from Fable to superman to Y to stuff I've never heard of. Amazing.

www.switchinggearsgame.com/temporary/contest/IMG_2623.jpg
Next up out of the box was a bubblewrapped clock from the good old evil empire:
www.switchinggearsgame.com/temporary/contest/IMG_2604.jpg
Then a whole keyboard came out of the box together with a bluetooth USB key:
www.switchinggearsgame.com/temporary/contest/IMG_2614.jpg (sorry for blurry pic)
www.switchinggearsgame.com/temporary/contest/IMG_2603.jpg
As we pulled stuff out, the pile of games starting piling up (as you can see in the pic above). Here's most of the games recieved:

www.switchinggearsgame.com/temporary/contest/IMG_2634.JPG
www.switchinggearsgame.com/temporary/contest/IMG_2635.JPG
By this time I was starting to hyperventilate by all the gaming goodness. There's everything from PS2 to DC to PC games in there. It's just a crazy amount. Age of Empires, Serious Sam, Darkness, SHOGO Simpsons and more. Mixed in are sound track cd's and making of DVD's and shit to keep me entertained for years.
Oh.. you thought that was the highlight? Remember, the box weighed 55 FUCKING POUNDS!
More clothes:

Instant FM music for my PC. Yeah, that's a great idea. I really want to listen to subpar music interrupted by DJ's and commercials. Fuck that. No wonder it's still sealed.

Business cards from so many people in the industry including our beloved Steve Gibson. I plan on contacting them all to call them fags.
www.switchinggearsgame.com/temporary/contest/IMG_2632.jpg
There was a ton of other smaller stuff in there, but this post is too long already. Anyway...
Yes, this is the place where you draw your breath in antici... pation. At the bottom of the box was my lost childhood:

That's right. A NES, a SNES, a N64 and a gameboy advanced with controllers and wires for all of them. I haven't held one of these systems in almost 15 years. I don't know if they work or not, but just being able to pick one up again was amazing. So many memories spent in front of TV's with friends when I was kid was racing through my mind as I lifted these systems out of this amazing, amazing box. I plan on spending the weekend hooking these systems up and seeing if they work. If they don't, no biggie, just the feeling of actually holding one again is amazing.
I want to thank Dahanese, Remo and Mark for holding the contest. And I want to especially thank Jason Bergman who donated all this stuff so I could win it. It really was absolutely awesome to hold those game systems again after so many years.
Edit: I went down and checked and in the NES is a copy of Super Mario Bros / DuckHunt!

In the epic battle of [ED] vs [SR].....
[ED] forfeits. Only 7 people showed. Big thanks for nothing to the FIVE people that were drafted on our team and didn't bother showing up, ever. Out of 14 people, five people is a lot.
Thanks to lowpoly, our valiant captain, and the rest of our team that actually did show up.
Good luck to the Rangers in the rest of the tournament! May you always have players to play...

The league is set, please begin logging in, we can't get rolling until everyone is signed up.
Thanks to previous experience with this, I don't expect games to begin for at least a few days. Sorry for the late start, but until 2kSports stops demanding every single player be logged in, there's just no way to kick this thing off on any sort of set schedule.
Couple notes:
Deathlove, call your friend, we're going to need him.
Holesinswiss, cltcprd, the schedule isn't as tight now and we need 2 more players.
Pandastrong, let us know...

I quit working at Microsoft a few years ago to switch fields and pursue a Ph.D. in molecular biology at Princeton.
Now I have the opportunity to work at the Facebook, possibly for quite a bit of money, and I don't know whether I should pursue it any further.
On the one hand, this could be a lot of money. On the other hand, I already un-sold myself out and have a successful research career in the works, which I'd be throwing out the window.
I can't sleep, I have no idea wtf to do, although I'm leaning toward not pursuing it. I hope nobody I know reads the shack without me realizing it :)

It turns out my TV, which is a Samsung LN-R3228W 32", doesn't support the HDMI 1.3 interface. The cable I bought is a 1.3a cable. So it's time for another cable purchase!
Any suggestions to which cable should I get? How about this one -
HDMI Cable male to male 28AWG - 15ft w/Ferrite Cores (Gold Plated): http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=102&cp_id=10240&cs_id=1024009&p_id=2529&seq=1&format=2 . That's the cheapest one I can find that's not HDMI 1.3.

Daily Audiosurf Shacker Challenge
Since a lot of us have audiosurf I figure it would be good if we had a daily song that we can all compete on.
A few simple rules:
* The winner gets to nominate the next track.
* Obviously we don't all have the same music so your choice has to be relatively mainstream (in terms of the shack's musical taste anyway). I believe there's a shack last.fm group so maybe we could use that for reference? You could alternatively provide free (or shacker produced!) music. I believe sharing gaming music is allowed under the rules as well.
* It's probably simplest if we restrict everything to the Elite cars for now. Maybe we could have a Pro category as well if there's demand for it.
* When posting your score note your audiosurf username, score and car type.
Bean nominated Beastie Boys - Sabotage as the first track, which is fittingly awesome. I started us off at 33,286 with Ninja Mono (username aegix).

I am running vista 64 bit, and i am trying to install a sound blaster - urgh.
It is a PCI Express Soundblaster X FI xtreme audio (not proper xfi apparently), and whenever i try to install drivers it says "Setup is unable to detect a supported product on your system". I have tried official drivers, hacked drivers, all x64 bit vista spec mind you.
Unfortunately the cd that came with it was cracked when it was delivered today (OEM), and so i cant run the software off the official disk. I want to actually make sure the card is working, is there any way to check that it is actually plugged in - but just not recognised by drivers?
Alternatively maybe there is a setting in bios that has turned off my PCIe x1 slots?? ill try switching slots, and see if that helps - but as i asked before is there a way i can tell what is plugged into the motherboard?
As per usual, official forums have no useful information or any official solutions/responses.
It is safe to say that World of Warcraft managed to suck me back in. Goddamnit. Having tons of fun with my lovely gnome warlock called fgt. Rerolling on another realm and picking alliance instead of horde has been awesome. Lots lols are had + noone needs to learn the basics (or advanced part) of the game = win.
Sadly, this will mean the end of EVE ONLINE. At least for now. I'm thinking of donating my account to a fellow Shacker. For free ofc. Not sure i will, but if you are interested feel free to PM me or post in this thread. In a way i feel sorry it didn't work out. Sounds silly, doesn't it.

Best way to test network connection? Have everyone shut off their computers at night and check speeds on the server?
Any specific tools I would have to use. I basically want to test raw download speeds, latency, routing. Any that generate reports would great. I don't have SMNP access to the Cisco router (yet).
