January Hardware Sales Show Wii, PS3 Over 360
by Chris Faylor, Feb 14, 2008 5:01pm PSTSales-tracking firm The NPD Group has issued its analysis of North American console hardware sales across January 2008, showing the Wii and PlayStation 3 outselling the Xbox 360.
- Wii - 274,000
- PlayStation 3 - 269,000
- Nintendo DS - 251,000
- PSP - 230,000
- Xbox 360 - 230,000
Totaling $377.8 million, hardware sales were down 25% compared to the last January. "Given the huge number of hardware systems sold in December, inventory shortages could be the biggest contributor to the softer than expected sales," analyst Anita Frazier reasoned.
In related news, a Microsoft representative told Shacknews that the Xbox 360 is currently experiencing shortages. "Xbox 360 is selling as fast as [retailers] can restock," the rep stated. "We are working as quickly as we can to replenish inventory."
The firm also released figures highlighting the month's best-selling software.
Kinect for Xbox One coming to PC
Xbox One does not provide any built-in DVR capabilities
Xbox One increases friends lists to 1,000
Xbox One achievements dynamic, not limited to single games

PS3: Bluray, better streaming media support (no transcoder bunk)
360: Media Center Extender stuff (I find the guide very handy!), A couple friends have XBox Live (I won't ever play with randoms though)
Really though as far as game libraries though, most of the good 360 games end up on PC eventually anyways, generally not the case for PS3 , although it's library is pretty weak sauce still.

I don't expect these figures to hold up in the US really. Everywhere else is a different story. I think the 360 will continue to struggle in Europe and japan (of course) and sell about on par with the Ps3 (if not more) in the US, at least for a while longer. That's my prediction. Needless to say, people calling the race won were sorely mistaken.
