X-Box Announced

All kinds of rumors are surrounding the Microsoft X-Box system lately. Here is the big news though, Microsoft has made an official announcement on the X-Box console system. You can check out some coverage and details here.

The X-Box is rumored to ship with 64-megabytes of system and video RAM, will have an 8-gigabyte hard drive, and will be powered by a 650MHz version of AMD's popular Athlon CPU. Contrary to previous reports, however, the X-Box will not be using a GeForce 256 as its primary graphics processor. Instead, Microsoft has supposedly opted to use a future chip from Nvidia - most likely the NV11 or NV15.
Also, GameSpot got word that the deal between Sega and Microsoft has been broken off.
... the royalties for the Windows OS and the cost to make the X-Box compatible with Sega's Dreamcast were factors in Sega's decision.

  • I think the best thing bout the X-Box is that it\'s a semi-open standard. Right now, all videogame console development has HUGE barriers to entry - you must pony up a couple grand for a dev kit, then pay a significant license fee to the hardware manufacturer upfront. So if you want to make a profit, you must sell a significant number of units - meaning homogenized, surefire BTDT games, and little in the way of risk or innovation.

I think the X-Box may change that. Anyone can go out and make X-Box hardware - just pay nVidia, MS and Intel. And, based on the fact that the X-Box is just a stripped-down PC, I am presuming that anyone can put together a development station out of generic PC parts, and just pay MS for dev-ware, with no expensive licensing fees in sight.

Result? Lower barriers to entry, less cost to develop a game, and suddenly anyone with some free time and the necesary skills can develop games for X-Box, meaning more innovation.

And if the X-Box can be hooked up to the net (a no-brainer), then grassroots developers will have all the distribution they need to market a hit game.

Personally, I can\'t wait. There are only so many times I can stand playing the same damn games every year.

  • #27... I know... Marketing sells consoles... But The Sony Marketing machine and Nintendo Marketing machine combined really overpowers the MS marketing machine for games... PSX2 will be unbelieveably popular... Dolphin will probably be Nintendo\'s last chance to make or break it.

Also what experience does MS have in making stable platforms? People that buy a console want stability, rock solid. A PC under most of MS\'s OS\'s is anything but that, but also, this would be a new OS. Even if it\'s based off of the NT 2K kernel it won\'t surprise me that there are glaring bugs in this thing.

Let\'s wait until more of the architecture specs come out. I can\'t believe it\'s coming out in Fall 2001 though... That is wack that they announce something that late...

p.s. I\'ve owned every console system there is and I can\'t believe I keep buying them. They are great eye candy but they quickly gather dust...
