Morning Discussion

Hey there Shackers, let's get a new chatty rolling. Last Friday I has asked for people offer up possible quotes for the title bar, and I think one or two of you might have come through. Feel free to point out your favorites, I think it might take a bit to go through that list. Also, congrats to Bamii for winning a copy of Savage 2, courtesy of S2Games.

Over the weekend we had a few article go up that you might not want to miss, as Faylor brought us this week's Release List and Nick challenges everyone in Sunday School. Nick also recently questioned the place of VOIP in modern gaming, if you haven't caught that article.

Finally, fresh from the ShackBlog

So I just read that Netfilx is going Bluray only. I really don't think that HDDVD has a chance of winning this. Sucks that they are going to keep dragging this out as long as they can.

Dude, Amazon half-priced a whole lot of HDDVDs. It isn't really dragging anymore.

The way that I see it though, you cant rent any HDDVDs unless you have a small place near you, both Netflix and Blockbuster only have Bluray. Also HDDVD is only getting 25% of the sales each week. You can only go for so long with a quarter of the market and expect your product to survive.

does anybody feel comfortable staying w/regular dvds right now?

sucks for early adopters ands its always been this way, but i dont know, standerd dvd quality seems sufficient to me so i really dont feel like i need to go out of my way to purchase yet another movie player

        February 11, 2008 6:34 AM

I still haven't bought a high def TV, dvds are fine for me. I do see the image quality difference but the prices didn't seem worth it. Especially with the format war going on.

I am not going to be buying something until the format war is over. You never know what is going to happen and even though I do think Bluray will win, my money is worth too much to me to potentially waste on something that is not going to be around.

If you dont have a super huge screen, yeah upscaled dvd's arent too bad. You really notice it on a 110inch projector though.

It'll be quite a while before I have a TV anywhere near big enough to justify high-definition, so I'm very comfortable staying with DVDs for now.

HD is way better looking than DVD, to the point that I won't buy DVDs unless the movie isn't coming out any time soon in a hi def format.

DVD looks fine on smaller TVs/CRTs. Once you start moving past the 40" screen though, their deficincies really start to show.

actually, this technology update has led me to reconsider my DVD collection and my habit of purchasing movies altogether. I own about a hundred of them, and I may watch one every six months. I don't think I'll be buying movies in any format ever again. Just not worth the "investment".

        February 11, 2008 8:41 AM

I stopped buying all together really. HD content really does look better, a lot better. So why put my money into a dead format or a format that may possibly die?

        February 11, 2008 9:00 AM

perfectly fine, can't see myself spending more than $150 on a high-def player, and I'm pretty sure my first high def purchase will be from Criterion, so I still have a ways to wait.

I have slowed down my DVD purchases though, I only buy less mainstream, more obscure and/or foreign films, figuring that they might not get a high def release for a long time, if ever.

Yeah another thing is once people get used to paying that much for HD movies it will become the new standard. Just like $60 for current generation console games as opposed to last gen's $50.

weren't dvd's priced significantly higher when they first came out? i think the game price thing is getting justified because production costs of making a game have gone from a camp of maybe 15 to 100's. (had to chime in to the 77 thread)

Yes. Hell, many DVDs are *STILL* marked for retail at $30, but most stores (Amazon, Best Buy, and the like) mark them down tremendously.

Then again, no one in their right mind is paying retail for high-def stuff either, since at least Amazon pretty much always has a decent price.

when I buy a movie, it is usually at release or a spur of the moment-I want to watch that movie again type of thing. I usually dont wait for a sale.

$10-15 is impulse purchase movie territory for me

I just got an email saying the following:

      Dear Sailor of Fortune,

You're receiving this email because you have asked to receive high-definition movies in the HD DVD format. As you may have heard, most of the major movie studios have recently decided to release their high-definition movies exclusively in the Blu-ray format. In order to provide the best selection of high-definition titles for our members, we have decided to go exclusively with Blu-ray as well.

While we will continue to make our current selection of HD DVD titles available to you for the next several months, we will not be adding additional HD DVD titles or reordering replacements.

Toward the end of February, HD DVDs in your Saved Queue will automatically be changed to standard definition DVDs. Then toward the end of this year, all HD DVDs in your Queue will be changed to standard definition DVDs. Don't worry, we will contact you before this happens.

I haven't put any money into an HD-DVD collection but I'm renting bunches of them. I was worth getting for me.
