The Electronic Sports World Cup has released a trailer for its upcoming 2008 Grand Final tournament, which will be held in San Jose, California from August 25-27, 2008.

The surprisingly well-made video features a brief explanation of the Electronic Sports World Cup, plently of nice words from the press, and some emotionally-charged highlights of past events. It's almost enough to make you feel like you were really there, minus the occasional smelly person and the shame of your inevitable defeat.

  • For games to become more televised sport, I believe they need:

    1) Really compelling announcers who people enjoy listening to. Think Madden (or whoever you provides compelling comentary when action is a bit slower).
    2) Individual personalities. People who are into sports are into individual players - their contributions, their styles, etc. Either the game would need to provide plenty of opportunities for players to showcase personality or it would have to come from the gamers themselves.
    3) A relatively stable 'game' year to year. If the rules and appearance of football changed every year, people would lose interest.
    4) As Edgewise suggested, multicamera/editing/etc. While the most hardcode gamers may enjoy a raw feed, most people need a bigger picture/more context.
    5) 'Home teams'. People need some sort of association so that that a substantial number of people around them will be into it as well - it needs to be a social event for the observers as well as the players.

...or at least thats my theory. :) In the end, I think the game itself is something that would need to be custom made for broadcast and maintained as 'the official game' - perhaps with minor tweaks and graphic updates - for a long time.
