Gran Turismo 5 Prologue Shots, Date, Price Released (Updated)

Update: Sony has officially announced that Gran Turismo 5 Prologue will be released in North America on April 17, with a price of $39.99 for both the Blu-ray and online PlayStation Store versions. The Blu-ray disc will feature an exclusive behind-the-scenes video titled "Beyond the Apex."

Original story: Looking for another reason to get excited about your PS3? How about a new batch of screenshots for the upcoming Polyphony Digital racing title, Gran Turismo 5 Prologue?

The game is set to feature 1080p presentation, improved opponent AI, over 60 cars, and 16-player online races. All this, but with only five tracks to do it on. At least they're "stunningly realistic" tracks, or so they say. Judge for yourselves by clicking below. And hey, yellow Stig.

I think Forza is the pinnacle of racing sims for me. I like realistic crash damage and physics / environment effecting every screw and bolt., not bumper cars.

Excuse me... What? This isn't THE Gran Turismo 5? I have always thought that Gran Turismo 5 Prologue was the actual completed game but in reality is just some beefed up demo we have to pay for?

Well fuck you too Sony. I'm really getting sick of the nick and diming (in this case its quite a bit more). More Characters, More Levels, more more more! .... but for a price

I have a PS3 and a Wii, i'm really preferring the wii lately with its complete and fun games that I can play over and over. Most of my PS3 games i've finished once and haven't touched again.

Wow in that first screenshot they are even simulating chromatic aberration up on the mountain there. The camera nerd in me is loving how well games are starting to simulate optics.

When are they going to be able to break the pricing bond between the retail version and the downloadable version? It seems stupid that you pay the same price for a game with a case, Blu-ray disk and manual as you do to download the thing to your HDD. It doesn't make a whole lot of sense. I'm sure it's because the brick and morter stores would throw a hissy fit... but that is going to have to change at some point.

Don't really like race sims so I thought the half-sized version might suit me, esp if i cna install it to the HD so I can just play whenever without going out of my way (big fan of that feature), but that's too much. I'd even spend 30, but they are being greedy.

This game looks great, I wish I actually gave a fuck about sim racers. I can't seem to get into any racing game that isn't Burnout or Need for Speed (well, the good NFS games that is).

This is one of those games where there are so many little details that when taken on their own look so amazingly real, that the bits that don't hold up are kind of jarring. I mean, all in all, it looks like a very nice racing game, but then you see some little detail like how the light is hitting all aspects of the Sanyo sign in http://www.shacknews.com/screenshots.x?gallery=9111&game_id=4446&id=112703 and it crushes your brain.. and makes a lot of other parts of the game suddenly look really fake and weird.

while the cares look spectacular, the environments just don't do much for me. i expected sharper textures for the roads and a few more polygons used for the guardrails. maybe i'm tainted (hehe...taint) by games like Crysis.

Thats not the stig btw, he is neither yellow nor covered in sponsorship stickers. He usually has one alpinestars embroidery on his racing suit though.

Can you crash the cars yet? I don't think i'm being picky but it just seems lame to be able to bang off another car to slow down / get around a corner without causing damage.

Everything looks great except the trees. The trees look really out of place in the one scene. Maybe out of place isn't the proper term, perhaps not up to par with everything else. Not saying the trees make a big difference, it was just something that really stood out to me. I'm sure when the game is in motion they look fine. I'll be getting this anyways, ugly trees or not.

At E3 2005 this game had the most realistic backgrounds I've ever seen. Like, the lighting and the sky and everything just looked so real. It must look fantastic by now. Has to be seen in motion to get the full effect.
