Evening Reading

by Steve Gibson, Jan 22, 2008 6:00pm PST

So although ShackBlog is still incredibly ugly I do think there are a few things going on there that are worth checking out as you are most likely bored at work. Keep an eye on that place or just hit the RSS and subscribe to it. There are all kinds of dumb things in our industry that need to be reported on. TONS.

As for the the videogame news around these parts today:

Lastly, RIP Heath

  • RIP Asus a7n8xDx 2002-2008

I have been using this board and an AXP something or other as my server for the last 3 to 4 years now. It has been a tank. For the last 6 months I would come down on random days and find it had shut off. When I would power it back on, I would get alternating beeps. If I tried two or three times, it would boot up and run for weeks (even months) on end w/o failure. I could reboot it for updates and it would be fine. This thing was a real trooper pooper. But I knew it wasn't long for this world.

Today it POSTed one last time. Everything had been reset. I did the proper this and thats and it wouldn't boot. Back to the beeps. I took off the side to try to re-seat the memory and that is when I saw it. Busted caps EVERYWHERE. Every single cap on this board is busted. I tried swapping out memory just for grins but same thing. I'm not going to mess with it anymore. 6 years always on is a hell of a run for a motherboard.

In this thread, we post fond stories of our Asus a7n8xDx boards. It was the number one board for a year+ when the Athlon XP was at its prime. I know many of you had them! For a long time it was the only place to go for live Dolby Digital encoding. What a fantastic board. The nForce 2 chipset was a beast as well. Plus this board had everything. Firewire! SATA! I probably purchases and deployed 50+ of these things and this is the last one I had going that I know of.
