Xbox With NVidia
by Maarten Goldstein, Mar 07, 2000 11:03am PSTWell, we know one thing for sure now, NVidia will provide the graphics technology in Microsoft's Xbox according to EETimes. It has some quotes from someone from Gigapixel, who were competing with NVidia for the graphics parts. NVidia was selected to minimize the variables and risk factors. update Jack - Good lord, nVidia's stock is up 20 points on this rumor. Remember folks, it ain't official until GDC.

I also wanted to ask why you think xbox will be expensive? Were talking about something that will come out xmas 2001. My guess is the chip will be based off Nvidias upcoming NV20 this fall. That leaves a year for the price to fall and we all know how much vid card prices fall in 1year these days. How much will a 600mhz cpu be in 1.5 years? Cheap cheap cheap. If it is standard SDRAM, man imagine the prices of 64mb in that time as well. I see no indication that it will be expensive.
Thanks!

It\'s not just about warez. Did you know that only 50% of american households own a computer? That\'s pretty amazing since America is by far the most computer user oriented country. Doesn\'t sound right but that is the statistic. Virtually every household has or did have a playstation/n64 at one time. If MS can penetrate the other market & enable joe blow hick to play SoF on his TV then they will be a sucess. I hope MS understands the console market is truely different then the PC market. We\'ll have to see in 1.5 years when it\'s actually out if they do.
Thanks!

of interest:
From a hardware perspective, analysts are in nearly universal agreement: There won\'t be much difference. The X-box will largely look and function like a PC.
Instead, Microsoft likely will develop a new operating system, but this presents another dilemma. On one hand, Microsoft ideally wants the X-box to provide a different experience. On the other hand, it wants it to be compatible with PC software.
In the end, this will probably result in an OS that looks different, but doesn\'t radically rewire underlying functionality, said Peter Glaskowsky, an analyst with MicroDesign Resources. How attractive an experience this will present, especially compared against the realism Sony has achieved with the PlayStation 2, remains to be seen.
If anything, don\'t expect Microsoft to push Windows CE, he added. The company tried to promote Windows CE as an OS on Sega\'s Dreamcast, but the effort floundered, Glaskowsky, among others, noted.
Prudential\'s Mosesmann also predicted that Microsoft would come up with a hybrid OS. \"Windows CE is too weak and Windows 98 is overkill,\" he said.
Another challenge facing the X-box lies in encouraging computer makers to build them. Game consoles and Internet devices generally sell for less than the cost to produce them. Manufacturers make up the difference by selling software and/or services.
Call me when you can demonstrate a board (and it had better be faster/competitive than the competition).
Whatever they release, it\'ll just be supplanted by PC\'s in a few month\'s, or a new Dolphin or whatnot... Now, if MS spun off the x-box in an IPO and it\'s own separate entity then something might happen... And if they removed any MS OS they might have...
The console market is much larger than the pc game market, absolutely. But a SIGNIFICANT chunk of that is due to the number of unique console GAMES (Obviously. Price being the other factor). If the (vast) majority of a consoles game content is available for both the console and PC, and looks/plays the same on both platforms, thats a significant blow to the console. Right now the number of titles that are cross pc/console are a significant minority. I doubt that will be the case with the x-box.
My (imaginary =() moneys still on nvidia though.
ATI will unveil details of its two new 3D graphics technologies at GDC. The company claims these new technologies - Charisma Engine and Pixel Tapestry - to deliver 10x increase in 3D graphics and to provide realistic 3D images. Here is a quote from the press-release:
The Charisma Engine is the world\'s fastest geometry processing unit and is also the first to incorporate advanced game character acceleration for 3D skinning and key-frame character animation. These effects are critical for enabling game characters to reveal life-like facial expressions and to achieve fluid movement and motion.
The Pixel Tapestry Architecture features the world\'s first GigaTexel rendering engine, and includes support for deep multitexturing and new 3D effects with eye-popping photorealistic impact. It easily deals with complex elements such as metals, liquids and wood and their complex interaction with lighting and shadows.

Somebody else posted it but nobody seemed to care.
3dfx has chosen the Game Developers Conference (GDC) 2000 (March 8-12) for VSA-100 graphics processor debut in USA. Besides, two days later they are going to give an opportunity for developers to have the first look at specifications of the next-generation processor, codename \"Rampage\", under NDA at company\'s special event - Immersion 2000, \"The New Generation\". So, we should wait for March, 9 to see the specs on the Web (despite of NDA :))) )
Rampage on March 9th... this will make or break 3dfx

Yes that\'s 19 grand in the bank you pretty fucking stock you!
My thoughts exactly. I dont like the prognosis for X-box. If the box is being driven by direct X, then developers are basically just going to push straight ports across = no differentiation from a PC. Sure the price is nice, but if the content is the same, then PC owners will have no reason to buy one. Thats a sizeable chunk of the potential market.
