Late Evening Reading
by Steve Gibson, Jan 16, 2008 9:33pm PSTGot a bit distracted this evening with some family showing up in town tomorrow morning.
Oops! At any rate Faylor suggested I start listing the actual gaming related stuff at the
bottom of ER just as a cute evening catch up since so much more news passes through here
these days. But first wrap your lips around these:
- Looking at the new DRM Apple DVD
format
- Scrabulous debate
- Oh and AppleTV to
win
the format war? - New material almost as
black
as Maarten - Apparently privacy is a concern
for shoppers
As for the the videogame news around these parts today:
- Nintendo Issues Early 2008 Release
List
- Gamer Performance Pill
- Savage 2 Launches
- Dead Space for PC
- Replay Couch 10
Lastly, Time Warner Cable is href="http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20080116-leaked-memo-time-warner-cable-to-trial-hard-bandwidth-caps.html">testing hard bandwidth caps
Daily Filter: Planetside 2, Deadlight
Weekend PC digital deals: strategy-o-rama
38 Studios, Harry Potter Kinect - Shacknews Daily: May 25, 2012
Minecraft for Xbox 360 dev working on 'Adventure' update
Demon's Souls servers extended again
I'm pretty sure it never came out, and the whole thing was much like Bit Boys Oy was for graphics cards.

Most people wanted a device that was something in between a computer and an iPhone...
This is just a smaller laptop that is only good for people who fly on planes a lot.. because I really cant see any benefit of getting this over a Macbook. Its thin........ but .... ok? whatever? but more expensive and less features...
They really needed to do something a bit different.. that people could almost slip in their pocket and still have a full OSX computer. Touch screen, something, i dont know?
If they would have atleast made the screen swival or something and make it a touch screen it would maybe provide something different. But now......This is just........ a laptop.

I have a C2D Quad core 2.4, 2 gigs of ram, cd/dvd drive, and a 8600 GT
Is a 450W strong enough for this system?
I'm having graphical problems with TF2 (but not portal) and WoW both going crazy and then locking up my machine. Savage 2 runs fine as well do other games, but for some reason TF2 (havnt tried HL2) and wow are giving me shit.

Now, i have to admit i haven't bought it yet either (too busy with TF2 and EVE) but that trailer (and the demo) really lures me in. Plus the multiplayer modes seem like a lot of fun too. If it was on Steam, i would have probably picked it up already. Hmmm..

I don't really "need" a new cell phone, but my current one is broken and fixing it would probably cost about as much. I'm looking for something simple and I only have a few requirements really.
* Must have BlueTooth, MP3 (or similar) for ringtone and text signal, should be fairly slim so it fits comfortable in a pants pocket.
* Would be nice if it had Push E-mail capabilities and music player. Camera too perhaps, but really not important at all.
* Not a fan of clam shell models, but I'll consider anything. Oh, and iPhone isn't released here so that's not an option.
Right now I have a SonyEricsson W800i and I've been eyeing the SE K850i but thought I'd look around some before deciding on anything...

Similarly, what's the deal with Amazon's Kindle? Now that it's been a few months did it flop or did it take off? I haven't seen anyone with an ebook around, but they might actually be doing ok and I'm just not seeing the signs of it. That said I'm a bit skeptical given how badly those things have failed in the past.

I'm considering building a new rig for my wife using one of those Shuttle bare bones systems from New Egg. Should be a pretty future proof system for what she needs, for under 1K. Problem is, I'm concerned about the power requirements. The Shuttle system has a 250W power supply. Would that be sufficient to handle the following build?:
Shuttle SG33G5B Intel Socket T(LGA775) Intel Core 2 Quad / Core 2 Duo / Pentium Intel G33 Barebone with HDMI/HDCP/Dolby Digital Live! DTS/Vista ready - Retail
Intel Core 2 Duo E6750 Conroe 2.66GHz LGA 775 65W Dual-Core
CORSAIR XMS2 1GB 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400)
BFG Tech 8600GT 512MB 128-bit GDDR3 PCI Express x16
Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 ST3250410AS 250GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive

Tonight's lessons were straight out of the Human Weapon Krav Maga episode. We did 360 defense (that KILLED my forearms (as the attacker, not defender). We did "bursting", which is just blocking a knife or punch attack while punching at the same time. Then a kick to the balls and run away. Next we did a stop kick, which is to stop a rushing attacker. So kick them in the chest, then the balls, then run away.
After we'd learnt all of those we had to close our eyes and have an armed attacker run at us. When they got near enough they would yell at you, and that's when you had to assess how close the attacker was and use one of the defenses we'd learnt. The attacker would call out at different ranges.
The good thing was that the attackers would attack you in all different ways. above your head, under to your guts, not only that, but that would really go for it. They wouldn't just stop because you kicked them. They'd keep coming at you, and you had to take them out.
After getting my dick flicked twice tonight by someone's foot, I just went and bought a cup.

That was pretty fucking cool! There was some camerawork that bugged me (omg something is about to happen so i'll zoom out and perfectly frame the victim so that it looks as cool but as set up as possible) and the ending could have been better, but overall that was one majorly engaging movie.
Alot of reviewers (Aint It Cool News is one) are claiming that the monster is OMFG OUT OF THIS WORLD, but to be honest it's nothing new. It's a cool monster, it's just not the overly original creation that it has been made out to be.
So yeah, go check it out. That includes you Dognose because there are lots of explosions and shooting and monsters fucking shit up and people dying and i think you will like it.

Team 17 is developing it and this should make many happy: "There really is nothing we are bringing over from the last game." On the down side they are also dropping the nudity but its not the first LSL to have done so.
Since its IGN PC I assume its coming out for the pc.

One thing I wish I could change, however, would be the draw distance. It runs silky smooth with everything maxed so I want to be able to increase the rendering distance. Seems like I'm trapped in a haze all the time, and not just from the fog of war. :(

I noticed the logins from shacknews.com and fileshack.com are shared. For example, if I login at shacknews.com and go to fileshack.com, my shacknews account is reused.
Does anybody know how this cross-domain login works?
I'm currently programming a web application and need something similar.

To better organise some awesome local Shackbattles and to get our shit together for scrimmages on Dallas and #69, I have created a Steam group for like-minded Aussies. The TF2 fun tonight was far too good to only happen once, so if you're aussie and reading this, join up!
