Perpetual Ceases Development of Star Trek Online, Project Continues at Unknown Studio
by Aaron Linde, Jan 14, 2008 12:24pm PSTWarCry is reporting that P2 Entertainment—formerly Perpetual Entertainment—will no longer be developing Star Trek Online (PC), according to "multiple sources at the San Francisco based developer".
The game will be developed under another Bay Area studio to whom the license and content—but not the code, WarCry notes— have been transferred. P2 will continue onward with a refocusing of their business strategy on the casual games market and continue work on the Perpetual Platform.
P2's bowing out is the latest in a series of bad news that has plagued Perpetual throughout Star Trek Online's development, including a liquidation and sale of the company and a lawsuit brought on by Kohnke Communications last month.

The project's original plan was to have a persistent universe, where starships would be manned by players at various stations [command, science, communications, navigation, tactical, etc.], but in the event of insufficient participation, an NPC would "fill-in" where needed. The only way I could see this working would be in an instanced-based mission scoping similar to Guild Wars. There simply wouldn't be enough active non-casual fans to drive the action.
Also--it seemed as though Perpetual was following id Software's design mechanic; develop the graphics and then squeeze whatever gameplay you can out of the remaining CPU cycles. There was no way they could have the level of planned visual fidelity in conjunction with the requirements of a underlying network infrastructure needed to handle a persistent galaxy.
Frankly--I'm relieved to see this project die. It was going to be the next Star Wars Galaxies.
