Xbox 360 Backwards Compatibility Development Possibly Over; Burnout 3 Downloadable Next Week

26
With the Xbox Originals program, which allows gamers to download full Xbox games to their Xbox 360 consoles, expands in scope--and actually draws revenue--Microsoft is likely slowing or stopping entirely development on standard disc-based Xbox 360 backwards compatibility.

Speaking to Kotaku at CES, Xbox 360 group marketing manager Albert Penello said Microsoft has "kind of hit the point of diminishing returns" with freely-offered backwards compatibility. "I don't know if we have plans to do any more releases," he conceded.

Microsoft has often stated its goal with backwards compatibility was to cover all of the most successful Xbox titles, and Penello believes the company has achieved that. A full list of titles, last updated in November 2007, is available on Xbox.com.

Meanwhile, the next title to hit Xbox Originals is Criterion's Burnout 3, according to the basically-official Gamerscore Blog. It will be available Monday, January 14 for 1200 Microsoft Points ($15).

It's understandable to stop BC development at this point, so far into the 360's lifespan. Still, I have at least one game that isn't yet compatible. I hope this isn't true, but I'll understand if it is.

either way, both options are choices for the consumer. . .

With the likely increasing possibility of a Blu-Ray addon for the 360 - big whoop.

Will Sony ever add additional backwards compatibility to the 40 GB PS3 - who knows - though I'm surprised it hasn't been hacked in yet by the mod community (or if it has been I missed the announcement).

          Stop trolling kids.

for all you people bitching about MS doing it, sony has started this same plan in japan, except the part where you can buy the games. Japan PS3's will no longer have backwards compatibility and I'm sure that'll expand to other territories soon.

The link to this story is on Blues news.

Starting 1/10/2008 the 20GB and 60GB Playstation 3’s will be discontinued in Japan. Once stock at stores across the nation are depleted no more will be produced. Sony’s press release says that their focus on PS2 backward compatibility is over and that the future lies with the 40GB model. The 80GB version of the PS3 was never released in the land of the rising sun thus starting 1/10 PS2 backward compatibility for the PS3 will be a thing of the past. The PR also says that no decisions have been made about the rest of the world markets in this regard.
