Morning Discussion
by Jeff "geedeck" Gondek, Dec 26, 2007 6:02am PSTHey there, have a good Christmas? Mine was pretty much all I could ask for and then some. How about you? I imagine we have plenty of people with new games and systems, so maybe we should have a coordination thread to unite newly gifted gamers to others?
Pretty much the only news to note is that keen Steam sale, so if you didn't get what you were looking for then maybe that will do the trick. Or? Or you could use your last chance make an entry to our holiday contest and take a shot at winning a 360 Elite, or at least a game for trying.

My wife has greenlighted the purchase of a new computer, using the money from selling our Wii, money we received from her grandma, and money we're going to be making off of some furniture and kitchen stuff we're selling right now.
What I need is the best video card on the market right now for ~$200.
GO!

My wire piece that stirs the popcorn was scraping the bottom of the pan, which I didn't realize as it was my first turn, so now one of the cogs is sitting in the middle of the other one and I'm having trouble putting it back into position. Is this a normal occurrence that I need to learn to fix once in a while or did I get one a fat kid sat on?

i am getting the 80% performance of the 8800GT for 80% of the MSRP vibe, as respects the ATI. and with all the demand for the 8800s, this seems like a reasonable alternative.
i currently have an 8600GT that i intended to step up but i was too broke on the december 20th cut off date. i got some cash for christmas and don't want to spend $30-50 over msrp for an 8800GT, but a new gpu would certainly be nice.
are there any problems with these ATI cards, drivers, and vista 64 i should know about?

They might as well have called it I Am Mediocre. Lots of forced "beat the audience over the head" emotional scenes and some of the most lifeless, undeveloped "villains" ever to grace the screen. Also, CGI + shaky-cam do not instantly make good action scenes. Not to mention the eight full length trailers they showed before it, all of which also looked painfully mediocre, with the exception of the Dark Knight.
TLDR...The Mist was much better.

So I finally had a chance to put up the pictures of my super duper awesome WE from Beastrabban that I got last week. Details in reply.

what companies have provided you with consistent, top-quality customer service?
things like this are so fucking weird it's worth bringing up. because good customer service is incredibly rare and outstanding customer service is pretty much non-existent, ESPECIALLY with credit cards.
a few months ago i saw in consumer reports that the top ranked credit card that any consumer could get was the Cabela's Visa. the only two that ranked better than the Cabela's Visa were a Navy thing where you had to be in the service and some other military thing i think. so the Cabela's was the absolute best of the best as far as something anybody can get. they said the service and everything was outstanding - far and away better than anything else. so i applied for one to kind of try it out.
first off: when you call the number on the back of the card it goes directly to a human being who speaks clear english. there are no phone trees or indians. it's just a person saying "hello."
secondly: the points you earn on it never expire. most points on most cards do at least once a year. the points are also given at a faster rate than any i have ever seen. after some mild spending i had 68.00 in points. they can be redeemed at cabelas.com which has pretty much everything outdoors related.
third: this is what blew my mind. i had a 140 dollar balance on the card over the holiday weekend. i meant to pay it off but forgot because so many things were going on. i noticed this morning i had forgotten and had gone past the payment date so an automated 35.00 late fee was put on the account. well, fuck. but it was my own fault. i still felt pretty stupid. so about ten minutes ago i got a call from a guy at cabelas. he said he was calling to apologize. he said they saw a late fee had been posted to my account and that after review it was felt that a late fee during the holidays when people might be busy "is not reasonable under any circumstances" and that had it already been removed. for my "trouble" they also added ten dollars in points to my awards thingy.
also, a few months after signing up i received in the mail a 50 dollar gift card that could be used on their site for anything. it just said "thanks for being a member." i googled it a bit and they apparently just randomly do this to people.

I ended up going with the 46" Sony XBR4. After being suckered into a 4 year extended warranty plan and a $200 dollar power bar, I keep telling myself the peace of mind was worth it. It was, right?
Now I need a HD satellite receiver and a PS3 before January 9th.
