Theres less penalty (unless you total the car) by crashing in Burnout then there is perishing in an FPS title where you are most likely forced to play that section or level over and over tile you beat it.
So yeah I consider part of the aspect of "crashing" taking out your buddies. Hell there are modes in Burnout:Revenge where you have to take out a specific car and then blow your car up taking out as many others as possible.
But yes, in short, when ti comes to "crashing" it entails taking out my buddies, taking out opponents, crash modes, etc. It's all part of the package I assumed.
