Morning Discussion
by Jeff "geedeck" Gondek, Dec 14, 2007 2:11am PSTAnd lo, it was Friday. Praise your higher being of choice. So there was more news with PS3 Guitar Hero/Rock Band compatibility, I'll leave that for others to interpret. In more positive news, we're looking out to 2008 on the 360, and here's our thoughts on it.
Speaking of praise, I admit to being pretty excited over this announcement of a Heroes of Might and Magic web game. I felt like the series had pretty much done it's thing, and having seen us embrace Urbandead, Ogame and more, I think pretty much given that it'll be well played here. This is a pretty transformative change for the series, so here's hoping for the best.

So supposedly there's a crack for the PC version of COD4 that gets you to 55. Glad I got the 360 version.
WTF?

If this game was nothing but racing and crashing I'd buy it yesterday but Jesus Christ why can't I do that in the freaking demo in some sort of official capacity.

Is that how World of Warcraft transactions normally show up on your credit card?
Are the seven digit numbers account numbers that could be used to identify the person who conducted the transactions?

So it sounds like the fan on my new GPU is constantly spinning as fast as it can. It was a lot quieter before I played Crysis, but now even after rebooting, it's spinning much louder, like it's under a full load, but it's just sitting at the windows desktop.
I downloaded nTune and changing the GPU fan setting doesn't seem to be having any effect. Am I doing something wrong? Is there something else I can check?

That said, are there any shows I should consider? Some shows I consider excellent are:
Arrested Development
Twin Peaks
Seinfeld
Curb Your Enthusiasm
MST3K
BSG through season 1 and half of season 2
24, seasons 1 and 2
The Prisoner
And from the approximately 4 episodes I've seen of each, I prefer the BBC The Office to the US version.
Recommendations along those lines? TIA, etc.

for various reasons, i realize it would be financially beneficial for me to buy a new television by january 1. i have been wanting a 40" LCD (it only has to be 720p) for a while. i'm eyeing a samsung, but i'm wondering if you guys can find any better deals on a tv of this size below $1000. the only restriction is it actually can't be more than 40" wide all told, because any larger than that it won't fit in my entertainment center.

Anyone interested in a Friday night Marathon game? The time is flexible, but I'm thinking tonight in a few hours. I'm itching to play (damn you pitboss cocktease), so it's not so much of a question of whether or not we play as it is of how many people join up.
It'll be funnnnnnnnnnnnnnn
Zanzares, Mooglebean, Buzzbat, Goncyn, et. al this is for youze

I just got a call from my doctor and apparently the ultrasound results just confirmed that it is the thyroid and the right side is much larger than the left, I think he said 5cm something or other. The blood work was normal, and now I have to go up to Robert Wood Johnson and get a biopsy done.
what's a thyroid biopsy like?

Hey, I worked on Rock Band (Project Leader), and wanted to respond to this thread to give everyone a bit of insight about how we made the choices we did in developing the PS2 version.
The PS2 version of Rock Band was developed by Pi, but we were closely involved with development and feature selection at every step. They did an awesome job, and totally delivered on the spec that we developed. During development we had to make choices to ensure the best game possible for the system. When we were addressing challenges in getting Rock Band onto the PS2, we chose to prioritize core gameplay. You can play 4-player songs at Expert, and the framerate is a reliable 60 FPS, because this was the priority for us, as it has been with every rhythm action game we've ever made.
--From a development perspective, there are two main reasons we couldn’t support character creation on the PS2 version.
1. The characters designed by the character creator on the 360 and PS3 are very processor-expensive to render, because the system was designed assuming next-gen graphics power. Down-rezzing that system to fit on the PS2 would have been a huge undertaking, and the results would not have looked good. Remember, ALL 4 CHARACTERS have to look good in Rock Band.
2. The 4-player track graphics alone are a big rendering burden for the PS2, especially at the harder difficulties when there are lots of notes on screen. For it to play well, we have to guarantee 60 FPS at all times, which in practice means that it has to be optimized for the worst-case scenario (in case you are curious, it’s Run to the Hills, 4-player, expert). The vocal pitch analysis chews up still more processing time. So, once the core game was implemented, there was very little processing power left over for complex character and venue rendering. FWIW, on-disc space was not the primary concern.
Since we knew we couldn’t do everything we would have liked, our choice was to focus on the gameplay. We stand behind that choice, and we think that being able to play 4-player Rock Band on a $129.00 console is actually pretty cool. I hope this explains some of the reasoning that went into the development of the PS2. We didn’t just dump it off, we were totally focused on it, and we think we made reasonable calls, given the trade-offs we were faced with. While we would have loved to fit all of the next gen features into the PS2 version, we’ve still ended up with a great game that we’re proud of and that we think PS2 users will enjoy.

In addition to removing the aforementioned features, they also removed DLC and online play, for obvious reasons.

except for my new car, i am 100% credit card and other debt free as of today. i also have raised my credit score over 700 after it's stumble.
the bad:
the place that burned my face charged more money to my debt card rather than refunding it, so i had to close my damned ATM card and dispute about 200$ of stupid charges.

The patch is incoming in the near future according to one of the developers: http://fourzerotwo.blogspot.com/2007/12/call-of-duty-4-modern-warfare-playlist.html
Updated playlists and fixing some issues including host migration! should be sweet

I can't afford a full upgrade* since I just blew my wad on presents, so I'd appreciate it if someone could point me towards a good AGP video card. I'm so far out of the hardware loop I don't even have a clue where to start looking. If anyone's wondering, I'm running an 2500+ with some kind of DDR RAM of uncertain speed on an Asus motherboard I haven't looked at since I put together this thing four or five years ago.
*Unless someone can knows of a CPU/mobo/video card/RAM setup for under $250. Add a power supply to that if 400 watts doesn't cut it anymore.

Today, I had the misfortune to watch the really cheesy film adaptation of the story (same title). A favorite childhood memory is now destroyed forever. It was even worse than Starship Troopers, and that's saying something. :(

I am being sent on travel in the very near future (Sunday) and I would like to pick up a camera so I can document the trip. Unfortunately, I know very little about the technical aspects of cameras, so I am looking for advice.
The main things I would like are fairly high resolution (which should be just about all of them nowadays), good macro capability, and the ability to later get a tilt shift lens. I have a budget of about $300.
The only advice I have heard is that the Canon Powershot is nice, but I didnt get filled in more than that. Thanks in advance!
