Sega Updates Dreamcast Trademark
by Chris Faylor, Dec 06, 2007 9:24am PSTSega of Japan has filed an updated trademark for the term "Dreamcast" with the United States Patent and Trademark Office, leading to speculation that the third-party publisher may be plotting a return to the hardware market.
Another popular theory is that the updated trademark represents Sega's protection of the brand, especially as the emulation of former Dreamcast titles, perhaps via digital download, is possible on PC, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Wii, or another unreleased dedicated platform.
The Dreamcast was Sega's last venture into the realm of hardware. It launched on 9/9/99 in North America and was axed less than two years later as Sega announced it would be focusing on publishing software across multiple platforms.
It has long been rumored that the company would return to hardware manufacture once it built up enough capital to do so. Sega fans somewhat jokingly point out that 9/9/09 would be a fitting launch date for a new Sega platform.

Also, I liked how a lot of games were designed to feel like you were in an arcade playing them.

i told everyone who i knew that was not playing dreamcast cuz they were saving their $$ for the ps2.
i still remember, i was in class when some dude had stayed in line to get one and was "like omg this is so awesome, best game i've ever played" (talking about smugglers run i believe)
i couldn't believe what a pos launch they had and ppl were flocking over it.
seriously, the only system i've every bought at launch is the dreamcast and i'm still bitter that alot of ppl passed on the DC for the ps2 when it could have lasted alot longer.
i still play it but wish i could find a damn broadband adapter, but not for the outrageous prices they are asking for it on ebay

My gut feeling is this is just some lawyer keeping ip and trademarks up to date and on the books. No new hardware is coming. Don't we have this rumor appearing once a year? Some site gets some info that Sega is returning to the hardware market and we get hyped for a few days and its for nothing?
If this is true, I think its more likely that Sega will come out with a line of cheap dreamcast units that have several built in dreamcast games that you hook to your TV. Sort of like those somewhat cheap atari and genesis units we see at Target, Toys R Us, and Walmart.
