Even *if* the battery life is significantly worse with newer 3G chipsets, a lot of people in Europe would rather have the option of 3G web browsing even if it meant a larger battery, or switching to email polling (with the 3G hardware powering down between polls and the voice side dropping back to GSM as it does anyway when there is no 3G/EDGE coverage) if it came to that. Obviously that is a subjective trade-off which wouldn't please everyone but that reiterates the potential for more than one device in the family, if it is indeed impossible to add 3G without cutting any corners.
