Deus Ex 3 Uses Tomb Raider Engine; Next Tomb Raider Game Rumored

5
Eidos Montreal's recently announced Deus Ex 3 will use a modified version of the engine created by Eidos-owned sister studio Crystal Dynamics for Tomb Raider: Legend (PC, PS2, X360).

"We chose the Crystal engine because we plan to help develop this engine more and then share it back with the rest of the company," Eidos Montreal manager Stephane D'Astous told Develop. "Having that technology from the start gives us a great advantage and foundation for our coders--there are no doubts about the approach, and we have few uncertainties."

Speaking of Tomb Raider, Eidos has filed a trademark listing for Tomb Raider Underworld, expected to be the next entry in the series. Trademork claims that rumors surrounding the title indicate it may take place during Wayeb, the five days of the Mayan calendar during which the dead can interact with the living.

And... why aren't they using the Unreal Tournament 3 engine?

If I recall correctly, the DX series were foremost FPS's. :P

I'm thinking cost. Hopefully that means more money is being put into art and game assets.

Even though I enjoyed Tomb Raider Legend (the best TR to come out for a while), I don't really thing its engine is suitable for Deus Ex 3. It's not bad, but far, FAR from the might of the UT3 engine, which the two previous installments were based on.

This is a huge disappointment and a very shitty start for the sequel... my expectations have just dropped significantly.

I've always been impressed by Crystal Dynamics' engine. They're one of those companies that doesn't fall back on a dozen cheap LOD tricks to make their game look better up close. Their games are always very sharp looking and run very well. Although you're right it might take more extra code to Deus Ex-ify their engine, I somehow don't see the merit in your overly dramatic condemnation of the move.

Everyone and their dogs seem to be bitching about problems with the UT3 engine so maybe it isn't such a bad call. Or maybe the bitching is not fair; I don't know.

Warren Spector has said that so much from the UT engine had to be rewritten for Deus Ex that he wasn't sure that it was much of a time-saving measure in the end. This is likely why Ion Storm modified Unreal tech to be their own for DX:IW and Thief:Deadly Shadows. When you want to do some different things with a game, it is often better to control the tech and be very close to the developers. Compare what Splash Damage and id were able to do with the Doom 3 engine to what Human Head did with Prey. If an external developer wanted to make a game like Quake Wars on Doom 3 tech, they'd probably be better off developing their own tech.

You guys seem to be forgetting one crucial detail: even the crappiest game based on the newest unreal tech looks leaps and bounds ahead of the best looking game on the TR engine and since we naturally assume that it had already been put to good use in TR: Legend, then we might as well compare it to Gears of War, and that's where all the giggling starts. Plainly speaking, it's simply a bad move, and I'd be surprised if they don't pull a DNF and change engines halfway through the development.
