Morning Discussion
by Jeff "geedeck" Gondek, Nov 28, 2007 11:00pm PSTLadies and gentlemen, I bid you good morning. Things are looking pretty good around here, there's a fresh contest going on so bring your best writing chops to the table. I haven't had many chances to gather friends up for Rock Banding, but I'm glad those cries of busted guitars are being addressed.
So with the holiday gaming rush finally in control, I think it's fair to look forward a skosh. Post what game or sequel would you like to see announced in the next year. Give a bit of logic, no one really needs to be told Madden 08, but some justification of it's existence would be nice. I'll randomly toss out a Left4Dead t-shirt to someone tomorrow.

Basically, I have some questions that are kind of economic, businessy, maybe cellphone specific, who knows
As some of you may be aware, Canada has quite possibly the worst cellphone service in the fucking industrialized world. (and even out of it, I saw a graph today comparing data rates and fucking rwanda beat us). There are some fucking insane number regarding what even 500 megs of data a month would cost, in the states like 60 bucks a month, in Canada, somewhere around $2400 a month. A MONTH. We have no unlimited data options. Our voice plans are comparable to what existed 10 years ago in the US.
If you drive along the trans canada highway, which is the major cross country highway in canada, you will not get continuous cellphone coverage. I mean, I get it, theres a fucking lot of territory to cover with signal. But its fucking insane that in 2007, I drive from Calgary to Vancouver and spend significant portions of the drive with zero signal. Not even weak signal, ZERO signal.
3g is a joke. Rogers, being the only gsm network (both bell and telus are the cdma/tdma non-sim card kind) has only really managed to roll it out in southern ontario and little bits and pieces of other centres on a trial basis. They have not revealed plans on when they may extend it to the rest of the country. Given that large parts of the country are still dead zones anyway, I'm not holding my breath for anytime soon.
So whats the deal? Why is this? Huge territory mixed with limited population? Is it just because we dont have enough people to justify multiple cell companies and they can have free reign? I'm honestly confused. Our broadband has fallen pretty far behind as well. Little to no FIOS, fucking terrible speeds and very few options to get what is offered in the US. We used to actually have more access to broadband, what happened?
now I've just read reports that leaked documents show a $799 pricepoint for the iphone WITHOUT unlimited data when rogers releases next month. That is, get this, DOUBLE the cost for the phone when our dollar is at par, and we'll get shafted on data.
This is quite annoying. I think I'd be happy if they just fixed their huge gaps in coverage, but what the fuck is so hard with keeping up to date?
