Evening Reading
by Steve Gibson, Nov 28, 2007 6:46pm PSTSo I finally got my hands on Gears of War for the PC. I've played a bit on the 360 but
never did manage to finish the game as I suppose I still live in the past and just prefer
a mouse for my FPS games. The Wii controller for Prime is pretty darn good too though.

For as much as I lambasted the my infiltrator's Sniper skills as useless in the first 30 levels, I had them maxed out for the final hours, boy did that pay off. Got me some high explosive ammo and even Geth Primes were 2 shotters. Boom headshot indeed.
What a wonderful final level too, I didn't feel that I was grinding it out at all, perfectly paced, no 'here's a zerg to deal with as a difficulty increase' crutch, just a bunch on new twists on a familiar level. It completely made me forget the woes of inventory and repetitive Mako exploring for elements and cards that seem to have no payoff.
In fact, just as I was starting to get tired of moving area to area as I fought the Geth over the last hours and I expected to encounter serious grind it out gameplay similar to KOTOR's infinite spawn last level, the game let up and dumped me in a new environment for a few minutes of action and on we went to another decent locale. Really felt like you were kicking ass, not wading through waves of enemies to prolong the game's duration.
Can't wait to play through it again making some different choices. It's nice that Bioware threw in, essentially, not 1 to 3 major choices in the game like KOTOR, but a good number of major plot branches to promote replay value...

So, after installing my old video card because I thought my new one was broken, I discovered that it had the same problem.
Out of frustration, I disconnected the monitor from my computer while it was still on, and guess what?
The fucking lines were still there.
Awesome. Too bad I don't have any spare monitors lying around. What the fuck :(
R.I.P. 2001fp
So.. what monitors are all the cool kids using these days? I don't want any of those shitty cheapo LCD's either :(

Let me preface this post with the following: This thread is just to see if anyone would be interested in returning to EQ2 now that Kunark is out, and fucking amazing. If you hate EQ2, think that it's ugly, find the art direction to be bad, etc etc, that's fine, but that's not what this thread if for. Lets have this be constructive!
Around this time last year a bunch of us were playing EQ2 in anticipation of the Echoes of Faydwer expansion. In the end a few of us stuck with it, moved to different servers, etc.
However, Rise of Kunark just came out a few weeks ago, and it is completely fucking amazing. The random changes to the game during this time, including crafting (which got even better!), the pure scope of the world, and how many unique instanced dungeons/raid encounters there are make this an MMO teeming with content. There are so many choices as to where you level 1-80, it's amazing. The combat system has a ton of depth, especially with the Achievement system added with Echoes of Fay.
What always sticks out most to me with EQ2 is just how much there is to do; the crafting is so involved and full of depth you could easily have a character solely dedicated to crafting and have a lot of fun. Community wise many people have built awesome businesses such as Bars, shops, spas, etc and a lot of them are frequently busy. The best part for me though is just the variety of adventuring places. Each dungeon is so radically different from the last, each with their own secrets and puzzles; and there are just SO many of them. Oh, and its also got Legends of Norrath built in now (SOEs TCG) if you're into that. I really think the reason I enjoy it so much is it's as close to the things I enjoyed from old-school Ultima Online as I'll ever get.
Anyhow, if you're at all interested in playing, I've rolled a char on Antonia Bayle and am having a blast. Right now its just a friend and I playing, so hopefully we can get a few others on board. Rise of Kunark comes with a 14 day trial key that unlike the other trials unlocks the entire game for the user (all races), so you can get a real good feel for it. If anyone has already bought RoK and wants to share their key with other Shackers, that'd be awesome.
We're on the Good/Qeynos side, but obviously betrayal is always an option for people who want the evil races (Betrayal is WORLDS easier now).
If you're really interested, or played previously and are on the fence and want to know what's really changed, http://clockworkgamer.com/2007/11/09/ten-reasons-you-should-buy-everquest-ii/ is an AWESOME read.

I am looking to add more shackers to my list of "people to go to when I have a <website, logo, etc> to be done".
post here, or send me an SM. I am interested in seeing portfolios and basically the more info I have the better.

I'm up to 3 pull-ups now. woowoowoowoo That reminds me of the pull-up bar I finally found. It works really great and doesn't require installation, just designed to cantilever on a doorway with trim. Hasn't left a mark or anything so far. Pull-ups are probably my favorite exercise. http://www.amazon.com/Creative-Fitness-DG-Door-Gym/dp/B00029A7C0

I wanted to do some LAN play when i was babysitting my little cuz. so i take my HTPC from upstairs and bring it to the basement so we can play. Hook everything up and turn it on...just a blue windows background, and a mouse pointer. No icons, no nothing. CTR ALT DEL does nothing. Right click does nothing. I sit there and try and figure this out for the longest time. I even call a guy that works on my laptops. He's like "try this try that" and he's all stumped. Saying there might be some sort of virus that takes over your desktop. Anyway, FF to later, problem unsolved, my cuz goes home sad because we didn't get a chance to kill each other. I go to bring the PC back upstairs and....the monitor was plugged into the Mboard vga port not the geforce3.
TL;DR:
Plug your monitor into your video card.

On a gamepad, the thumbsticks don't have enough range to be considered fast (eg doing a 180 turn ).
On a wii controller, your arm often shakes too much todo something fiddly (eg trying to cut a straight line in trauma center).

It came down to a draw so we had to answer 3 questions to decide the winner. When both teams answered all 3 questions correctly, we had to nominate a representative to go up and do a question-off.
First question, what was the name of the main character in the Space Quest games. Neither person knew the answer (Roger Wilco)
Second question, what was the name of the first episode in Doom, Neither person knew the answer (Knee Deep In The Dead)
Third question, name 2 Canberra based games studios (2k Games Australia and Microforte).
The guy from 2k answered "2k Games Canberra", WHICH is technically incorrect. They won anyway and scored a groovy trophy.
We were fucking robbed, but we did manage to walk away with a copy of Tribes Vengeance (useless) Freedom Force (not useless), a japanese Mario shirt and a jug of beer.
The moral of the story? Always have dinner before drinking.
