Mario Galaxy Sells 500,000 at Record Speed

15
The "Mario Mania" of previous console generations has seemingly returned in full force, as Nintendo's Super Mario Galaxy (Wii) became the fastest-selling Mario game to date in its first week at retail.

The title shipped 500,000 copies in the seven days following its launch, Nintendo announced today, also making it the fastest-selling Wii game since the system's launch last year. The data comes from Nintendo's internal sales figures.

Games in the Mario series have sold a total of more than 198 million copies since the plumber's NES debut. For more on the title, check out Shacknews editor-in-chief Chris Remo's review, where he says Galaxy "taught me to love again."

wow, this list truly highlights what a loss it was to sony to lose any sort of exclusivity to Grand Theft Auto. It is the only major series that hangs in with the various nintendo franchises

if my calculations are correct, the GTA series, having sold 65 million throughout the three series, made sony over 3 BILLION dollars. And they couldn't pony up cash to either buy Rockstar or make GTA exclusive?

I assume your calculations are MSRB times units sold, which reminds me Ali G's ice cream glove pitch.

dunno how accurate this is, but like they say, SMB3 was the best selling game never bundled with hardware, until one of the pokemons iirc.

      Mario (200 million)[153]
      Pokémon (164 million)[154]
      The Sims (90 million)[105]
      Final Fantasy (75 million)[155]

Get the fuck out of here, Pokemon has outsold the Sims, Final Fantasy and is gaining ground on the ENTIRE mario series? Jesus christ, it's like printing money when one of those is released. O_O

Well deserved though in my eyes, these games are excellent despite their kiddy stereotype that people tack on.

I have a 23 year old friend who generally hates kiddy games (he complains about TF2 b/c of the cartoony look), but he got hooked on all the nintendo DS pokemon games.

Pokemon games are handheld videogame crack... but they are pretty much (at least the last three rounds of releases) the same game with new Pokemon. It's pretty obvious they are running out of ideas for them too, though.
