Holiday Release of Unreal Tournament 3 PS3 Likely

Though it won't arrive alongside the PC version on November 19, it's looking very possible that the PlayStation 3 edition of Epic Games' Unreal Tournament 3 will arrive in North America by the end of 2007.

"We think there's a very solid shot we'll get [the PlayStation 3 version] out this year," Epic Games VP Mark Rein told Eurogamer. "Right now we're very close to a release candidate, and we should have it finished by the end of this week. Then we send it off and it's just a matter of what happens from there."

Publisher Midway previously doubted that Epic would be able to deliver the PS3 version in 2007 and formally delaying the game into 2008 earlier this year. "Our expected product plan is to release UT3 on PC in November and the PS3 UT3 in Q1 2008," Midway CEO David Zucker said when the delay was announced.

Zucker further elaborated that the company would ship the PS3 edition earlier if it was done and noted that it has yet to specify details regarding the eventual Xbox 360 release, likely due to UT3's status as a timed PS3 exclusive. Rein issued a statement shortly thereafter saying that the delay was a precaution but Epic hoped to have the game out this year.

Though it may hit North America in time for the holidays, Rein does not anticipate the European edition of UT3 PS3 until next year. "Europe's a problem because the certification process in Europe takes longer," he explained. "They're testing all these different languages in all these different countries, so I doubt it'll be released this year in Europe. But I don't know. We'll have to cross our fingers and wait and see."
