Morning Discussion
by Jeff "geedeck" Gondek, Nov 05, 2007 5:27am PSTSo how about that news of THQ acquiring the trademark for Homeworld? As far as creating a unique and memorable setting and experience goes, the first game is at the top of my list. Plus I mean, spaceships blowing stuff up, that's kind of hard to fault. Of course it really just means one thing to me. We need an Honor Harrington-verse fleet battle video game. Yup. Faylor is here to start your Monday off right with an index to this week's cavalcade of game releases. I hear the new Fire Emblem isn't quite as brutal with it's frisky "Mid-battle Save" system. I for one am glad this new technology has been discovered and applied, praise be to the next gen.

Is this all a running joke? This almost looks like a parody of a police bulletin. Look at the kid drinking through the straw. Are people actually doing this?

I use gmail POP in Outlook 2007 at work and at home. Now usually when you use a POP account and want to get mail on both you just have to check off the setting to leave a copy of a message on the server. So far in gmail it will mark the mail on the server as read and will not download the mail on 2 different computers, only one. I've double checked the leave a copy of a message on the server setting and the message is indeed on the server. The only thing I see in POP settings is the section on what to do when mail is accessed by POP. Currently it's set to keep gmail's copy in the inbox. The only other options are to delete or archive.
What gives? Am I going to have to just forward gmail to a regular POP account to receive mail through POP at both locations?

The teams seem pretty good now that the one team I was hoping to be eliminated first was the one that was. Damn, I'd have been pissed if I had gotten kicked out because of a stubborn donkey

We've got a visitor in town from the mysterious far-away land of Sweden, {venger}. This means we should go out drinking somewhere in the city tomorrow night. Anyone interested in grabbing a few drinks tomorrow? I was thinking the bar at Howard Hughes center, but if anyone else knows of any good places that might be better, feel free to suggest them.

While I do believe I was right in saying that his comment was hyperbole of the highest order, I will also concede that this episode elevated Dexter above itself and actually managed to be meaningful, funny and really intriguing character/plot development. They are finally starting to allow the characters to live and breathe a little beyond their genre-restricted selves, these actors have elevated the material so far but last night was the first time the material was outstripping the actors and they had to keep up.
Michael C. Hall of course, continues to provide one of the most unusual characters in television history, and unlike abrasion's comments in that thread, I don't think Dexter is becoming any less compelling. If anything, given the character developments, he's becoming far more interesting. His discoveries about Harry fucking his biological mother, cheating on his foster-mother, allowing his biological mother to die for a case and invalidating the code that Dexter has lived by is now allowing Dexter to accept what he is, a fucking psychopath - Harry's pseudocode prevented Dexter from killing for the simple pleasure of it and although last night was an example of a situation where he didn't need to kill the vigilante-copycat (until he told him everything at least), he wanted to and enjoyed it. Being freed from Harry's code and the hypocrisy of a double-life etc allows him to ditch the troublesome mom and the pretense that he's trying to be a normal guy, it'll be very interesting see where they are taking Dex with this. I'll be following every step of the way though.
And who else thinks the meth addict line from Lila was bullshit? I think she's a nympho/klepto.

Ok so it was a bad stick of RAM. I took one out and tried to boot with just one stick in there and worked like magic. Went and got both sticks exchanged today.
So... that was last night. Today.... it's been freezing randomly (BSOD). Can't be overheating because according to the bios, the CPU temp, right after a BSOD was 42C, and the mobo temp was 32C. That doesn't sound very high to me.
Any ideas?

As of 2.3, mechanics and itemization will exist to effectively eliminate the ability of mobs to dodge or parry a tank's attacks. Although frustration with the WoW raiding game has me somewhat disillusioned and encouraged me to quit my guild, minor changes like this give me some hope that Blizzard developers are very gradually creating a game that sucks less and less.
Also, healers are getting free spell damage. That's good too.

If you have a chance to go see it this week (last week), I would highly recommend it.
The best way I can describe the 3D sensation is that the movie screen wasn't actually there and I was sitting in the studio where they made it and was watching real models walk around on screen. Incredible, just incredible.

My wife and I watched Ratatouille last night and loved it, great acting, great story, great music, and fucking hilarious too. My 1.5yr old daughter couldn't really watch it after 40 minutes without any real stimulation beyond it actually being an animated movie. She's a big fan of Aladdin and a lot of the old school animations like The Jungle Book and so on, but she loves The Incredibles. I think Ratatouille is just too much talk, character and nuance for kids... I loved it, and I think my daughter will probably come to love it when she gets older, but I'm wondering how many kids loved this movie.
Did you shackdads out there think this really engaged kids? I mean, a fairly smart child over 5 could probably really enjoy Ratatouille but overall I think it was a movie squarely centred on adults. I mean, the real crux of the movie is the chef wowing over a critic, not exactly kiddie fare.
