40GB PlayStation 3 Model Announced For U.S.

23

Sony today confirmed that a 40GB model of the PlayStation 3, recently introduced in other territories, will be coming to North America as well. The 40GB PlayStation 3, which lacks backward compatibility with the PlayStation 2 and comes with two instead of four USB ports, will retail November 2 for $399. Sony also announced the 80GB model introduced in July, will receive a price cut. It will go from $599 to $499.In an interview with the Wall Street Journal, Sony chief Jack Tretton admitted that the $599 price point was probably too much for most consumers "based on traditional videogame pricing." He also acknowledged that the removal of backward compatibility is mostly to encourage people to purchase PlayStation 3 titles, and does not save Sony a significant amount of money.

Man shit like this just reinforces how rooted we're getting in the PAL territories. I could import an 80gb PS3 from the US for less than it costs to buy a 40gb here. That's includes shipping and import tax.

In fact, I think I will do this. Selling my Wii + games for over-inflated Australian prices should almost cover it.

While I think PS3 games don't, I'm pretty sure some Blu-ray movies have region coding so unless you also import all your titles ( I know you guys get screwed on those as well) you might have problems playing some of them.

Amazon had a great deal in Europe: 60GB PS3, 2 controllers, Motor Storm & F1 or Motor Storm & Resistance for 499 Euros. But it seems that special deal ended. :/
