First Post!
by Maarten Goldstein, Oct 14, 2007 8:20am PDTTime for a chat refresh after nearly 11800 comments in the old thread. So what's been going on? Went through all of The Orange Box myself this past week. Episode Two is so fantastic, I'm probably going to play through it again some time soon. The work Valve does in the FPS genre is just unparalleled. Everything comes together just so nicely. And of course I have to mention Portal. I knew it was going to be funny, but it was pretty much hilarious all the way through. Hope we'll see some map packs for this. Also grabbed Project Gotham Racing 4 yesterday, as it was released a week later here in Europe. I never really liked 3, but I enjoyed the other two games in the series, and so far so good with 4. Really digging the bikes, and the game looks great as always. Movie: It's not how you stand by your car, it's how you race your car.

I was playing as a sniper on tc_hydro and the game went into overtime. Spies are really aggressive during overtime, so I became a spy and dressed up as my own teams sniper and crouched down in a corner. I baited an enemy spy into getting a little too close and got the first few shots in. A team mate finished him off. Suck it spies.
except for sweet lew... stay the fuck away from me.

As I already owned Half-life 2 and Episode 1 prior to buying the Orange Box, it now means that I am able to give a lucky shacker one of or both games as a gift.
So, the first person to guess the number of grubs I have squished in Half-life Episode 2 (its greater than 200 and less then 333) gets the games!
Conditions: You must have Steam!

I would make a portal on the bottom of the ocean and one more on top of a giant structure somewhere and watch it flood. If there is an opposite of pyromania, I think I have it. (Hydromania?)

Not that it's a HUGE issue, especially since EP2 does a much better job of placing the pauses in natural spots, but if I'm going to build a system in the near future, this is going to be my target. Can it be done?

I have just released the demo for Zombie Slayer, a Doom 3 mod I have been working on for the past several months. It has gameplay similar to Dragon's Lair and (from what I've been told) Shenmue. Basically, you have to hit a specified key at the specific moment in the cinematic or your character fails or dies (after 3 failures).
Screenshots are here: http://zslayer.moddb.com
You can download the mod here: http://files.filefront.com/slayer+demozip/;8798973;/fileinfo.html
Also, if you don't ever plan on installing Doom3 ever again, here's a spoiler video I uploaded to youtube:

Why is it that me and my friends are the only ones who are obsessed with the gamecube game, Mario Kart : Double Dash?? The maps are amazing, the play style is classic, and we've literally been playing the game for the past 5 years. I play with friends in London and New York City, and we even have a trophy that an asian friend created, which is a Star and the words "MARIO CARTS" written on the base. We've even considered opening a bar which features several networked game cubes and screens... we're still ironing out the details on that one :D
I have screenshots of winning an AllCup by .001 seconds.
I honestly think that Double Dash is amazing, if not perfect, except for the multiplayer online capabilities that don't let you choose your guys. As a party game, 2 man All-Cups just are timeless and classic and I see myself still playing this with my friends for many more years.
That being said, I hope that the control of the Wii is as tight as the Gamecube, because I've pulled off some insane stuff on the Gamecube version! The Wii controller and I... don't really get along.
But honestly, I really really don't understand the Double Dash hate that is apparent and everywhere. Do people just stink at boosting and get frustrated when they lose? Its honestly THE best game I've ever played... and I know lots of friends that agree with me. But on the internet I see mostly hate for it.
Maybe someone can explain, or just post that you love Double Dash as well??

So let me get this straight. MC saves the galaxy. Everyone thinks he's dead. Deserves a memorial, right? All these chumps can do is scratch is name on a broken plane?!

These ideas are only extenuated with the The Orange Box which contains one of the most innovative games to be released in awhile (Portal), the most refined singleplayer games in existance (HL2+Episodes) and a very unique MP segment with TF2.
I don't understand the Halo hype. Those people, even myself, need to look back and see what they purchased the game compared to the quality of other games out there. The only thing I can congratulate Bungie with is being the first developer to put PC features like taking screenshots and making movies on a console, yet shouldn't this be complacent in all games by now? Its weird reading the reviews and comments with people lavishing so many comments on "innovation" with these modes....which aren't new at all....

Yet Another Yet Another Portal Thread
A lot of people this week have been talking about how surprised they were that Portal had such a great story and they've been saying that they consider it to be one of the best stories in a game, certainly in its genre anyway, that they can remember. While they might not be wrong about that, I think that they're talking about something different than story.
First of all, the story that Portal tells is pretty limited. This isn't a bad thing, but it's actually pretty unique in terms of games. Most games that try to tell a story aim for being a novel. The Half-Life series is like a novel, as is Halo, and pretty much any FPS or RPG you can think of. Some of them can tell pretty good stories as far as the medium goes.
Portal isn't really like that. It's really more like a short story. Now, that's not a criticism at all. Short stories don't really have beginnings, middles and ends like novels. Short stories give you a glimpse of a setting and present an idea, usually an idea that is presented to make you think about how something like that would work in such a setting. Portal does this by giving you the idea of being a human experiment in a lab and being given a tool that you figure out that you can use to escape it. As far as a short story goes, it's really pretty good, like a Phillip K. Dick story.
But the length and depth of the game's story isn't really what people are so enamored with, is it? What people really are hooked on is the storytelling. Short stories are great because you're not handed a series of plot points. You generally get one plot point and it's a straight shot to get there. Instead, most of what fills in the rest is the setting, the emotion, the way people talk, and the idea of placing yourself into that situation. Most of what you get of Portal's story is entirely inferred from the look and feel of the clean test labs and spooky outer areas and the constant feeling of threat that GLaDOS places on you. They're these little snippets that you put together to get an idea of how the situation makes you think and feel. You can have a story that isn't deep, but it's still immersive. That seems to be what games are good at, and if developers take anything away from Portal, maybe it'll be the idea that the method of storytelling that Valve pulled off pays off a lot more than attempting to make a 10-hour game into an epic.
Or maybe I'm totally wrong.

Can anyone explain the business sense in the way that EB and others push preorders? The other day I basically had to Bauer a guy to get the standard retail price of a game rather then the fabulous discounted preorder price. What on earth is it about preorders?!

Three acoustic songs by Sigur Rós, performed live in New York. They are playing small acoustic gigs to publicize their movie Heima ( http://youtube.com/watch?v=EhLZP6Cz2dA )

Sigur Rós allow public recordings of their gigs so I don´t see this as a nukable offence.
