Late Evening Reading
by Steve Gibson, Oct 11, 2007 7:35pm PDTWell the Call of Duty 4 demo seemed alright. Graphics didnt really wow me but I assume the lack of 'high' detail options in the demo may have a bit to do with that. Oh and yay for Glibert Arenas huh? Pretty impressive stuff. So then:
- Dude running suicide website arrested
- The ongoing iPhone brick fight
- Women dig deep voices :(
- USA is the world switchboard
- Columbine-Style plot foiled

If Valve can make the best games ever made, why in the fuck can't they fix the sound skipping issue?
Seriously. They are smart people. But yet, when I play any Valve game, when I turn a corner or go to the next level, the sound skips.
This has been a problem for what, four years?
And they can't fix it?
It doesn't really bother me, but given their talents I'm surprised they have not been able to overcome this yet.

Been playing a few hours....and am near a sawmill or something
holy fucking shit, that battle with the striders at the rocket launch things is probably the single most intense battle I have ever had in a PC game, ever. Jesus christ on a pogo stick, talk about fucking amazing. Man, my heart is still pounding!

Half Life 2, Episode 1, Episode 2, and Portal all play beautifully on the 360. The controls work just fine, and outside of potentially slightly longer load times than the PC version, you'll get a very pretty and enjoyable experience on the 360.
The same can not be said, however, of Team Fortress 2. The 360 version just pales in comparison. Sure it looks great, but the speed and franticness of TF2 just does not work as well with a 360 controller. Likewise the netcode for the 360 is terrible and large amounts of unplayable lag can be expected unless you have a perfect host when you have a large scale battle.
So, If you want the orange box for the single player elements, go for it on the 360 if your PC just isn't going to cut it graphically. But, if you want the real TF2 multiplayer experience, the PC is the only way to play it.

How many of you ACTUALLY USE flip3d? I honestly have never really used it except to show off. Maybe if it had replaced alt+tab instead of supplementing it?

Portal > HL2: Episode 2
All this time anticipating this collection, and I never even imagined Portal would turn out this good. A game that introduces a completely fresh, mind-boggling gameplay element and simultaneously re-invents videogame storytelling. I made a mistake playing Portal first, because then I was disappointed by Episode 2!
The story in Episode 2 was excellent, of course, but the gameplay still felt like just another Half-Life game. All you do is run and shoot, run and shoot. The blatant linearity of the levels really kills the immersion for me, and the non-stop, "Great job, Gordon!" and "Hey, look, your radar is blinking!" lines from Alyx are just cheesy as hell. It's like Valve assumes the player is complete idiot and needs to have his hand held the entire time. It makes me wonder why Gordon Freeman is so highly acclaimed by all the in-game characters--all he ever does is go from Point A to Point B like a mindless puppet and shoot things along the way. It's not like he ever has to explore or make a choice. 9 times out of 10 he finds his way through a "maze" by falling down a random hole when the floor breaks beneath him. It was really cool back in 1998, but it's starting to get dumb now, guys :(
At the end of the day, Orange Box is still game of the year material, but I hope when Valve wraps up the Half-Life series they can also wrap-up some of the horribly tired conventions that it still clings onto.

Video Game poll :
Would you guys play this game :
-Game setting is kind of like Shadowrun, Deux Ex
-2d action rpg with a side scroller view. Think of it as a mix of Metroid with Diablo2(character development, skill tree, loot gathering, fast paced action etc...)
-hosted in a browser, therefore available from anywhere with a pc
-physics engine (very well done, but in 2d, does everything you expect from a physics engine)
-Graphics looking like typical modern 2d games on the DS and Xbox live for example
-Persistant : you create an account and then you can create characters and play with them over time. Every item you get, experience points etc... is saved.
-Possibly multiplayer but not likely. There will be definately be player interaction in the form of Auction houses and guilds etc.. But actual mutiplayer games might not be possible.
-New content every month (items, levels, monsters, skills etc...)
-controls : move with W,A,S,D aim with mouse, shoot with left mouse button)
-3 classes (soldier, ninja, mage) each with unique stats and traits (ninja would have a grappling hook and could run on certain walls, mage could teleport etc...)
-fast, consistant frame rate
-free (ad supported, non obtrusive)
I'd give more detail but I think this sums it up pretty good.
I already started development on this but I'm curious to see if anyone but me would have an interest in this.

Ya, because he shouldn't be sent to jail over a probation violation like anyone else in the country would be. THEY'RE JUST BEING RACIST CRACKERS!

I know that those outside the US (and Canadia) were not able to see them together, and probably would not have appreciated the experience as we here in the US did*, as the concept of the grindhouse is/was unknown outside North America. But surely y'all outside North America have had access to that style of film on VHS/DVD/SKY TV and know what it's like to sit through 70 minutes of low-budget boring dialog-filled plot setup just for the awesome 10-minute payoff and abrupt ending? Y'all can get "Vanishing Point" and "Dirty Mary, Crazy Larry" and "Castle of Dracula's Wolfman Mummy Basement Dog" over there right?
Anyone who lives outside North America and has seen Death Proof care to reply with your thoughts? I promise to read them, fascinated and grateful, even if I am sickened by your opinion.

Within the admin area I am able to see what people search for. Lately googlebot has been going wild in there...
googlebot seems to always be searching in there for either random things like "thursday" "buy" balls" "tits"
but also for things that relate to the products we sell. What's the deal? The sites been active for over a year and only the last 3 weeks has googlebot been using the search. why is it searching for these things?

It felt short but it also left me psyched about going into the next mission. There's also some replayability value in the demo between the higher difficulty and the various weapons that you can pickup. I loved the huge number of enemies and the way they get knocked around with every bullet you put into them (headshots are really fun).
I was really impressed with how silky smooth it ran compared to say, Crysis. Sure, Crysis has the enormous, wide open areas and COD4 will probably be a MUCH more linear game, but performance really affects enjoyment of a game. I know, I know, Crysis is still Beta. I'm not even totally sure why I'm drawing comparisons to Crysis, except that COD4 reminded me of the hype and expectations of trying out a game for the first time. For me, COD4 delivers.
