New Xbox 360 Motherboard, 65nm Graphics Chip Arrives Next Year

16
Though Microsoft's Xbox 360 models shipping in the coming months will contain a more efficient 65-nanometer processor in their motherboards--codenamed Falcon--the successor to this model is already in the works, according to San Jose Mercury News game guru Dean Takahashi. The new motherboard is codenamed Jasper and will pair the 65nm IBM microprocessor with a 65-nm ATI graphics chip as well when it's included in Xbox 360s starting next August.

For consumers, Takahashi speculates Jasper could mean another price cut, as the production of Falcon-including consoles this fall was paired with a price cut on all 360 models. For those worried about overheating issues, the Jasper motherboard should be an improvement even over the Falcon model as far as heat output, making problems down the road less likely.

Of course, yearly price reductions on consoles have been common in prior generations, so the cost reductions on Microsoft's part may just push the company's game division toward greater profitability if it achieves its goal of staying in the black during the current fiscal year.

Next August?!!? That's a lot longer than the times I've been hearing. Guess I won't be getting one again for a while.

Just get one now. If it breaks you have the warranty for it. Chances are they will ship you the new more efficient model to replace it.

"If it breaks, you have the warranty..."? Well, that's all good and well until it RUNS OUT...then you are left hoping that their shoddy product doesn't fail on you.

Chances are NOT that they will ship you a new, more efficient model to replace your dead one. What fantasy land are you living in? If you want to have more confidence in the product you're buying, hold off and wait until Jasper sees the light of day. Don't pay to beta test for MS (same goes for SONY and their PS3..wait for the entire system to go at least to the 65nm process...45nm will be a big break in another 1-2 years).

When I sent in my 360 for repair, they sent me a new unit that had been manufactured in July of this year. It runs quieter and cooler than the unit it replaced. And I've still got a monster warranty for it. Win-win.

Is it quieter because of an updated DVD Drive? I've seen my cousins xbox360 and that DVD player makes some noise. If they've improved the DVD drive i might be interested in getting one fo the 65nm falcons.

The DVD is indeed a great deal quieter.

In fact I would say to wait until the XBox720 or PS4 are out...but then you should probably wait until they fix those...and I here sub-nano diamond opti-quantum entanglement gates are going to be a huge breakthrough like 5 years after...so you might as well wait until then...or better yet, if you're going to be waiting that long anyway just wait until the NEXT generation comes out, but then...

The problem with waiting for things too long is you get into this game where you never upgrade. I agree with waiting for things to settle down (I don't alway do it...I got a 360 as soon as I could (haven't had any problems actually) and the same with the Wii and various other systems...but I have been taking a wait and see approach with Vista (thats how I generally deal with operating systems)...and I don't have a PS3 yet...but thats more a matter of not seeing anything really compelling yet and there not being a silver one to placate my shallow need to have everything in silver).
