Wii Virtual Console Receives Sin & Punishment, Real Super Mario Bros. 2

Treasure's import-alicious Nintendo 64 shooter arrives in North America for the first time, along with the true sequel to Super Mario Bros.

Ending months of speculation and somewhat unfounded hopes, Treasure's formerly import-alicious Nintendo 64 shooter Sin & Punishment has arrived in Wii's online Virtual Console, marking the title's first North American release. The game has been expected to hit VC and even appeared in Europe's VC last Friday, though Nintendo of America remained silent on the issue.

The 3D shooter--which comes from the developer of action classics such as Gunstar Heroes (GEN), Bangai-O (N64, DC), Ikaruga (DC, GCN), and McDonald's Treasure Land Adventure (GEN)--features English voices and Japanese subtitles. It sells for 1,200 Wii Points ($12), a 200 Wii Point ($2) premium over the usual price of N64 games.

This week's other VC title is Nintendo's oft-forgotten true NES sequel to Super Mario Bros., known in Japan as Super Mario Bros. 2 and here in North America as Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels. Rumor has it that, back in the day, the game was deemed too hard for everyone outside of Japan, so we got a Mario-themed version of Doki Doki Panic instead.

Unlike the North American debut of The Lost Levels on the Super Nintendo mega-compilation Super Mario All-Star--a 16-bit update of Super Mario Bros 1-3 and The Lost Levels--today's release marks the first NA release of the NES original.

"Never before shown in proper unmolested form here," exclaimed Shacknews community manager extraordinaire Jeff "geedeck" Gondek.

As with Sin & Punishment, Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels carries a slight premium, priced at 600 Wii Points ($6) instead of the normal NES price point of 500 Wii Points ($5).
