It's actually quite common, both in writing and reading. I remember there was some online test where you read a paragraph and try to spot the missing words, and it was surprisingly difficult. Our brains are quite good at prediction and filling in the blanks. So good it often happens without our knowing.

I remember this game I had that was mind tricks and stuff like that...
There was this one puzzle where you just had to read aloud what the card said, it was arranged in a triangle like this, except the triangle was equilateral.

I totally didn't realize that it said "a bird in the the bush" until both "the"s were actually pointed out to me. Some of that stuff is crazy. Yeah, our brains are good at correcting mistakes to what they should be, so much so that it is difficult to convince yourself that there is an error sometimes.
