Evening Reading
by Steve Gibson, Sep 27, 2007 6:00pm PDTSo if you use the Dallas FileShack server you should hopefully see a bit of an improvement in speed on that thing as we've done a pretty major change in systems back there. We're hoping to see some even more sassy improvements around the turn of the month. We think you guys will be pleased.
Lastly, go get Prime3 for your Wii already! What the hell are you doing!?!?

I love it, don't get me wrong, part of why I play these campaigns is the combat challenge and tactics, but it's by no means easy, and this isn't even on Legendary.

I picked up: Starcraft (Collector's Edition), Myth: TFL (already own this for Mac but this is the PC version), TES II: Daggerfall, Icewind Dale, Thief II, Warcraft 1, and Severance: Blade of Darkness.
As for ones I haven't taken (yet): Might & Magic VII, Might & Magic IX, Heroes of Might & Magic III (plus Prima strategy guide), Kingpin, Diablo Hellfire expansion pack, KKND Extreme, Stars!, Championship Manager 3, Asheron's Call (this is a brick, I assume), Age of Empires III, Caesar III, Revenant, Grom, Civil War the Game, Commandos: Behind Enemy Lines, Cossacks: European Wars, Black & White, Spellforce, Devastation, Summoner, Defender of the Crown, Europa Universalis II, Baldur's Gate II (just the manual, no box or game!), Crown of the North + Valhalla Chronicles bundle, Patrician II.
I haven't even heard of a few of those.
Convince me to pick more for myself, or: if any Shackers want me to pick up something to ship to them then let me know. Please only say if you're genuinely interested in the game, not just Ebaying it. It's now 9:30 GMT, you have until I leave work at about 5:00 GMT.

You guys don't attack in enough force to make a difference. And when ever you have the advantage you run back to heal up, giving up all that effort you just put in to getting x done.
Really frustrating when you don't see your advantage and press it.
EVERYTHING in TF2 rewards attacking and it is the best strategy in almost all cases (even defending Gravel Pit or Dustbowl). Deny opposing attackers the high ground and learn to deathmatch and you will dominate the other team in short order provided enough people attack.
Once both teams start doing this then the games can potentally come down to the stronger deathmatch players, but this is almost never the case.
tl;dr attack gives you all the advantages. Standing around waiting on defense gives the other team a big fat target to run an uber charge on.

Tonight, I had my first real run as a Sniper, leaving Pyro and Demoman as the only two I haven't played enough to be decent with.
I have to say one thing: /]holy shit]/
I usually suck as a sniper. I don't have the patience for it, or there's no good, defensible sniper holes, or...whatever. This is entirely untrue in TF2, at least on Gravelpit.
There's big sightlines on all three areas. There's ample places to put your back to a wall to prevent spies. But no place was completely safe. At least, no place I found.
So, TF2, thus far I've found a use for every single class. As the heavy says, YOU DID WELL!

It's a favourite recipe of mine from when I was growing up which my dad would make, which he got from his mom. it's called "Poor Man's Pudding", or in french "Pouding au Chomeur" (Welfare pudding) due to the fairly simple ingredients. The coolest thing about this recipe is that it makes amazing cake with a thick syrup/sauce built in, AND it magically transmutes during cooking. I'll explain in a sec.
Poor Man's Pudding
SAUCE:
2 cups brown sugar, packed
2 cups water
1 scoop butter the size of an egg
BATTER:
1 Butter the size of an egg
3/4 cup sugar
3 tablespoons cocoa
1 1/2 cups flour
1 tablespoon vanilla
3 teaspoons baking powder
1 cup milk
Directions:
Start by making the sauce, and preheating the oven to 350 F.
Mix the sauce ingredients, and put over low heat in a pot, stir occasionally, and let come to a boil. Then remove from heat.
While the sauce is cooking, prepare the batter in the bowl you intend to place in the oven (a small/medium casserole dish, that is oven proof).
Take the sauce, gently pour over the batter, and place in oven. This is the cool part.. by the time the recipe is done, the cake will be floating above the sauce. CRAZY!!!
Cook at 350F for approximately 45 minutes.
Cool before serving. (though we could never resist eating a little bowl of it as soon as it came out of the oven. It was nuclear hot and sweeter than packing your mouth full of raw sugar. Have milk handy.)

Anyways, I was wondering if anybody here has tried doing anything similar and what your results were, if you have any advice and also where to pick up some nice running shoes on the cheap.
Thanks!

So I need some help deciding whether to go 720p or 1080p.
For those of you who have owned both...is the difference on a 50" TV worth it? Really that noticeable?
A TV purchase should last several years IMO, and I don't want to spend the $$$ for 1080p, because for half the price I could get a 720p TV of the same quality (everything but resolution being the same) and the same size. I'm set on a DLP rear projection TV or the SXRD, fyi. I don't like LCD, and I like the way DLP and the SXRDs look.
AFAIK SXRD is the way to go. I found the KDS-A2020 on Amazon.com for $1600 (including shipping) which seems like a good deal, but I could buy a 720p Samsung 50" for like $800-900. On one hand I think going 720p and inexpensive would allow me to upgrade in 2-4 years to whatever the new hottness is, like SED if it ever comes out. And maybe during that time I could resell the Samsung and maybe get half of what I paid, back.
However tv tech may not change for another 7-8 years, so going 1080p now would be the worthwhile route and save any concern for upgrading for several years.
Links. 1080p: $1600 http://tinyurl.com/2hwgjb
720p: $900 http://tinyurl.com/2tt8sy
Also considering this $1200 1080p http://tinyurl.com/2u3zzq
And LED Engine 1080p, $1400 http://tinyurl.com/24peyj
From what I have seenin person, SXRD blows everything away. But... $$$ :(
Anyone owned the Samsung HLT5075S? I haven't seen one in store yet, but I'm going into Best Buy tomorrow to look around. I'd rather have a local store deliver it, but no one beats Amazon's prices. :(
Also I'm going to be sitting like 6ft away. So according to this 1080p isn't really worth it: http://www.carltonbale.com/2006/11/1080p-does-matter/ Other than that the only reason to get the SXRD is for, well...overall picture quality, which is top-notch. I have a small living room, I can't get that much farther from my screen due to my apartment's setup.
So if you guys own or have owned any of these TVs and/or have personal experience with rear projection TVs or SXRDs, I would greatly appreciate feedback. :D

Just finished a pub game as a medic, spent most of the time only healing 2 guys (bleekselderij and KojirouF). The might have names like they type with their face but dammit they knew how to keep a medic alive.
In return I bestowed upon them the mighty ubercharge and together with did smight the enemy verily until all their control points were naught but ashes in our wake.

I've already got my set picked out based off of reviews and avsforum.com, now i need to decide where to buy.
I can get it from Costco for ~600 with a two year waranty (no shipping would pick up in store): http://www.costco.com/Browse/Product.aspx?Prodid=11200279&search=vizio&Mo=4&cm_re=1_en-_-Top_Left_Nav-_-Top_search&lang=en-US&Nr=P_CatalogName:BC&Sp=S&N=0&whse=BC&Dx=mode+matchallpartial&Ntk=Text_Search&Dr=P_CatalogName:BC&Ne=4000000&D=vizio&Ntt=vizio&No=0&Ntx=mode+matchallpartial&Nty=1&topnav=&s=1
Or I can get it from newegg for ~500 total with a 15 day refurb return policy + whatever is left on the manufacture warranty:

Has anyone had big issues with refurbished lcdtv's? Opinions on whether the extra $100 is worth the two yea warranty?

I had not "unlocked" it or anything. I had installed installer.app, and that is all.
it says it can't install the update, and every time I plug it in and go to itunes it says "detected iphone in recovery mode, please restore your iphone." i've done this like six times now, and followed all these tips
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=305868
and nothing works. This is fucking bullshit.

It's a colour reconstruction of one of the generals done my a friend of mine. He took tiny samples from the surface, put them in a mass spec, guessed what paint would have been there originally, made fresh paint that matched as closely as possible, painted out samples, measured the colour, applied patches of that colour to a 3d model.
Interesting!

I hate careerbuilder.com. It is worthless. I don't know why I keep reposting my resume there. All I ever get are ads for extras for movies and telemarketing. Monster is not much better and the university job placement process is just as bad.
I'm going for my Master's of Instructional Tech. I'd like to get into a position that I can do some teaching in front of people for experience. I've worked a tech position with video conferencing at the university for the past 5 years, so I have that end more than covered. I've got Word, PowerPoint and Photoshop down (not hard to learn, I know). I need to brush up on Excel (which I will be doing this semester). Access, I just have to sit down and learn it. Never had to use it before. I have basic knowledge of Flash and Fireworks.
I'd like to get into teaching apps. There are a few companies around the area that do this. There's one literally down the road from my house. Should I just walk in with my resume and ask for a job or shoot them an email? I can't quit the university job because it's paying for school. However, I am sooooooo tired of retail and I need something that I can use later on for work. So, the question is: Where should I post my resume so I can get real leads on real jobs? and, Should I just stop at places and hand them my resume and ask for a job?

Also, assuming I pull the trigger on this, I'll need a new mousepad. I currently have one of these (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817114182) but it's a couple years old and is starting to get funky. What do you guys use?
