Morning Discussion
by Jeff "geedeck" Gondek, Sep 25, 2007 10:00pm PDTHow is it going? Stay a while and chat! So I guess it's clear that Halo 3 is pushing the 360 (thanks Fred!) more than ever, as we've had a notable number of 360-cides via the infamous red ring of death. Heh, if they wanted to offer a really appropriately themed service for the Halo 3 launch, maybe they should have opted for Pelican-delivered cross-shipping warranty repair for those machines, ala how RMAs are normally handled. Did you see the Halo 3 photoshopping contest results? Lots of great submissions, and I really could have easily given away twice as many prizes. On the plus side, it'll just be days before we having something new for everyone to partake in. Random Shacknews Facts: Steve used to be homies with Santa Claus. That's actually who did all his ink.

Look at what your teammate's classes are. You should always have a couple engineers, and a couple medics on the team.
Medics, don't charge into battle.. instantly switch to your healing gun (2) and train it on a soldier or heavy nearby. There's an uber charge meter, when that gets to a hundred hit mouse2. When your partner charges in battle, he's depending on you, don't abandon him at this moment for someone who may have accidentally hit the 'e' key. Instead stay with him away from the line of fire if possible, the healing charge will go around corners. You'll get assist points for the kills your partner makes.
Voice. This isn't voice chat. If you don't know the maps, or aren't up on the game yet, please pipe it. I don't want to hear you swearing when you die. I don't want to listen to a conversation. I will just ignore you or turn that shit off all together, it's really distracting. Some people are helpful so i don't want to turn it off, just use common sense, and imagine yourself playing without a mic. Is what i'm saying helpful and relevant to a person without a mic?
Pipe in with your tips and questions you want answered. I'd like to see some people's map-specific thoughts and strategies. 2fort i know pretty well, the others not so much.

I'm playing the Halo 3 campaign on Easy. Because I enjoy taking my time in games like this, taking in the scenery, and not getting frustrated by getting killed over and over. I'm not as young as I used to be, so my reaction time is slower. I was upset to find out though that there are no achievements for Easy mode. Why? Why punish us that don't have the skills to play hardcore or legendary? (yes i know there are achievements in Normal as well). I think it kinda sucks.
Oh well, I guess I'll play it again on Normal after this run, I just am really more interested in the plot and story than anything else, so it lets me pace myself and get further into the story when playing on easy..
Go ahead and call me a wuss or flame me or whatever now..

Isn't it obvious to everyone that Tribes and Tribes2 were the best games ever? Don't you miss skiing across huge vistas and nailing people with mortars? Have you forgotten the happiness that it brought you?
It's like a slap in the face of gamerdom. Of all the obviously inferior games that keep getting made and remade we just can't seem to get a successor to tribes.
I'll be in my bunk. crying

Don't get me wrong: the co-op part is great: I played through with 2 add'l co-ops last night on Legendary in about 7 hours (sans first level), but just taking the overall body in, gameplay, design, and story combined, its rather unremarkable.
There's new weapons and new vehicles, but where combat will occur is highly predictable, and like the other Halo games, it's all canyon-like (still linear but you can spread out in several places), and while there's a lot of checkpoints that really come in handy in late sections, there were only a few places that the three of us really had a stumbling block to get through, otherwise easily willing to rush in without too much worry. Add in the second to last Convanent-ship-gone-Flood that is highly disorienting that really threw off the ending. Heck, there was more story in the Marathon-like secret terminals than there was told through the various cutscenes. No, I am (seriously) not bitter about the ending, I know a lot of people were though; just that.. well, I didn't feel the love overall.
I know Halo's more about the multiplayer, but Bungie's done much better on the single player side before.
(That said, I need to run through Legendary first level tonight, if anyone wants to co-op, and also hit a third terminal in the Ark.)

It's 100MB. Unfortunately the bitrate is a bit on the low side so the video is a bit blocky, but it's too late to re-encode tonight. I'll check this thread tomorrow and if there's demand I'll convert the other demo, and/or re-encode this one for better quailty.
Bonus points for counting how many times lakren whines about the ping to Valve.

Also on a somewhat related note, if a 360 dies that is out of warranty what is the cheapest way to get it fixed, just send it in to microsoft?

My component video input just stopped working. I've had my HD receiver hooked up to for 2 weeks now and everything has been working great. I've even been able to run PIP with the TV and PC. So, last night after watching some TV and working on the computer, I turn off the monitor and go to sleep. I wake up this morning and turn the monitor back on and I can't get a component signal. I've tried hooking the Wii up component and still nothing works. I tested S-Video and that still works, but component doesn't anymore. Has anyone had this problem or heard of it happening? Did I somehow fry the component hardware in the monitor or something? Thanks in advance for any help.

Computer 1: Wife's first floor, cable modem, with Vonage router
Computer 2: Mine second floor, hardwired through wall connection to Computer 1
Computer 3: Kids, no network connection, different room on second floor.
I purchased a wireless router and a PCI receiver card to enable Computer 3 for web use. Can I just connect the wireless router to my system and enable the kids system without an issue. Or do I have to lose the curent Vonage router (connected to cable modem) and substitute? Just trying to get limited internet access to the kids room, without running fricking cables up/down walls.

I have always been a little hesitant of steam, mostly because I don't like the idea of having to connect to a central server before playing a game. Computers and internet connections can get flaky from time to time.. and when shit breaks, you have to wait to play. I had quite a few issues yesterday which I was able to solve with the help of some shackers and the support page. I have no doubt it was a bug on their end or just not enough pipe for the users.
Fast forward to tonight, when I repeatedly get a message saying steam is just 'to busy' to handle my request at this time. Now i've bought more than a few games from steam and have gotten over the fact that you dont get manuals or dvds like you'd bought them from the store.. i've even overlooked that you don't get a price break. Not being able to play TF2 because steam is 'to busy' can suck my balls, ass, and dick. It's just wrong, open the fucking pipes already.

Shazbot! cobra's thread about Tribes ( http://www.shacknews.com/laryn.x?id=15209925#itemanchor_15209925 ) seems to have stirred a bit of interest for this old gem. So I propose we have a Shackbattle to celebrate the glory days! Back when epic, 64 player battles could take place over a 56K modem and didn't even require 3D acceleration. Who needs TF2, Quake Wars, Halo 3, or any of that other new, expensive stuff anyway...Tribes is arguably more advanced than any of those!
Seriously, the game has aged extremely well and it's 100% FREE to download and play. Download it, unzip, run the installer and also run the included patch:
http://www.fileshack.com/file.x/5054/Starsiege:+Tribes+Full+Version
If you would be interested in an organized Shackbattle (because finding a populated, non-modded server to play on is impossible), reply in this thread. And if you can provide a server to run this battle on, please mention that, too. Hope to see many of you in a grand Tribes-revival game soon!

Shack, this girl in my dorm wants to know some good computer games. Problem: she has no real graphics card on her laptop (Intel XTREMEZ!!1!). I've already determined that The Sims is no problem, so add in your suggestions.
