Wal-Mart Canada Matches U.S. Halo 3 Pricing

by Carlos Bergfeld, Sep 24, 2007 5:09pm PDT

In the first lucky break for Canadian gamers in industry history, the Canadian unit of Wal-Mart will sell the standard edition of Bungie's Halo 3 (X360) for CA$59.83 to match the game's standard $59.99 price point among U.S. retailers, Wal-Mart Canada announced today. Our gaming friends up north have typically paid a CA$10 premium on games, despite the growing value of the loonie, the Canadian dollar. Four days ago the loonie actually matched the U.S. dollar in value, and has been trading above the U.S. dollar since--explaining the 16-cent difference between the Canadian and U.S. prices. "We have taken the opportunity of a higher loonie to lower prices where we can," said Wal-Mart Canada VP Jim Thompson in the announcement. It's unknown if this move by Wal-Mart Canada will motivate the industry at large to stop overcharging Canadian gamers, but perhaps even more important is whether this CA$10 price drop will force gamers to take notice of Bungie's relatively obscure first person shooter amidst blockbuster titles like Telltale Games' CSI: Hard Evidence (PC, X360, Wii) also debuting this week (at a CA$10 premium).

  • Um... no. The Canadian dollar isn't higher, the US dollar is way down. The US Dollar Index is is currently down to 78 when it used to be more than 100 until 2002. The index compares the exchange rate of the US dollar to that of the Euro, Japanese Yen, British Pound, Canadian Dollar, Swedish Krona, and Swiss Franc. At this point, 100 USD will only exchange for 78 of the theoretical "index dollars". Back in 2002 the same 100 USD would get you 120 "index dollars". If you want to travel outside of the US you have lost a lost of your purchasing power, depending on where you want to go. The low dollar index means the cost of goods you buy will be rising since most everything today requires something to be imported. That chicken you bought at the store is not imported, but the feed or a feed additive may come from China or some unknown country. Even that green plastic Halo 3 box was probably imported. Since game prices are pretty much a fixed affair that may not hurt you directly, but it that much less profit for MS which will lead to future higher prices of your next mouse or game peripheral. Bah, enough for now.
