I bet you were just dying for that new Metal Gear Solid Video Graphic Novel. I think we might do a Halo contest soon, with a bit of the photoshoppery and ms paint magic to determine winners. So Remo and company were talking about "gamer literacy" on the Shackcast, and I thought it was interesting enough to get some broader opinions about.
What games should you play to consider yourself "gamer literate?" What experiences are so important, whether in terms of story, gameplay, atmosphere, music, or some other reason, that they must be played in order to consider yourself knowledgeable about gaming?
Some examples that came up on the podcast were:
Super Metroid
Sim-City
Castlevania: Symphony of the NIght
Full Throttle
Final Fantasy 7 (lol)
I think everyone can come up wtih the obvious examples, such the big first party Nintendo games: The Mario classics (1, 3, World, 64), The Legend of Zelda and Ocarina of Time.
Half-Life
Quake
Doom
etc.
But what are some less obvious games that you would nominate as necessary for someone who wants to be gaming literate?

I manage the first combo and get in some damage, but at the end of the combo my cute Japanese fighter chick punches his chick over a fence.
And she's stuck there, can't punch through, can't walk around it, can't jump over it and time runs out and I win on more damage.
Granted we haven't played DOA4 all that much but... WTF?

Do you know of a program called "Gadget Show"? It is some tech show in the UK, I haven't heard of it because I live in the land of the free. NEWAYZ! My site is going to be featured on it sometime soon so I was wondering
1) Is this show popular?
2) Is it gay?
3) If I find out the airing date of when my site will be on, any chance you might be able to DVR it or put it online for me?

A few tips I've collected from the past hundred TF2 threads, and some I've come up with on my own. I encourage people to reply with their own tips, so that we can direct people to a particular thread for future questions.
FAQ:
Q: What are the minimum specs for TF2:
1.7 GHz Pentium 4
512 MB system RAM
DirectX 8 compatible video card
Q: What does it mean when it "can't verify your STEAM userid ticket"?
A: logout of steam, then log back in
Q: Game crashes directly to desktop before getting to the menu system.
A: Run the game in windowed mode. Right click on "Team Fortress 2" in steam, go to properties, then click on "set launch options" and add "-windowed " to the box.
Q: Is there anyway to speed up loading in TF2? I have 2 gigs of ram, do I need more?
A: For the initial load where it loads up a map for the main menu, to stop that, add +map none in the command line (right-click game in Steam, choose Properties, go to Set Launch Options, put in +map none.)
A: adding -console to the shortcut makes the menu load faster (cuz it won't load the map as a background if console is up)
Q: What are the shack servers?

Q: What are the passwords for the shack servers?
A: If you don't know this, the hint that part of the word is "box" doesn't help, and you can't get into the chatroom, then you're going to have to start asking people here.
Q: Why do I keep dieing so quickly?
A: Because you suck at this game. But so does everyone else, so it's okay.
Q: Is it worth it?
A: Yes.
Map Tips:
cp_dustbowl - There are 2 command points for each sub-level, move to defend the first before setting up to defend the second.
cp_gravelpit - It's not possible to get command point C without first getting A or B, so the defending team should setup to defend both A and B, and the attacking team should initially focus on either A or B. Once both of those are lost, fall back to defend C.
ctf_2fort - instead of taking the briefcase/flag to your sniper deck, you now take it to your own briefcase/flag room.
Class Tips:
Scouts - Can double jump (jump, then press jump again in midair) to get over obstacles to head for the command points faster than any other class. 2 scouts blitzing to a command point is an easy way to get it faster than the other team.
Hwguy - Aim on an entry door and keep the gun spinning (check your control options for specific key) to be ready to fire as soon as someone steps out of the door way
Pyro - A little weak? Ambush your prey, getting as close as you can, then pull out your shotty to finish them off. Pyro's fire is the new Medic's Aids.

The news that Mass Effect would feature an uncompromising, high-res simulation of alien lesbian sex was sweet, and hot, like spun sugar. For Gabriel, at any rate. Some of the community reaction is dedicated to demands for gay parity for the male persuasion of this sexual equation, lengthy treatises by oiled men who crave starborne sodomy. The rest of the dialogue is just boring. Boring, terrestrial, and (quite frankly) myopic.
Where are the bipedal crustaceans in this calculation? The swirling, aroused gasses? The lonely, sentient space station whose hermetic bulkheads hold secret clusters of erotic delights, provided your character has both the skills and equipment? Carpe astrum, you Goddamned backwater clowns. There's must be an entire universe of thrilling, dangerous, sometimes razor sharp genitalia that slavers beyond the Horsehead Nebula.

TF2 is an incredibly polished game with great style and flair. There are many great touches and elements that while not affecting the game play enhance the experience (e.g. stats, character vocalizations, map preview videos, etc.). Its cartoony, violent, and often funny. It looks great, it runs great, artistic flourishes abound. Robin Walker et al. have gone to obvious painstaking lengths to make the game easy to play and understand by providing useful and entertaining feedback and direction.
However, the thing is, I played this game in 1997. Or rather, take away all the polish, all the flair, all the support for easing new players into the game, it really hasn't changed at all. At its core it has not fundamentally changed at all. Is this what 8 or 9 years of development produces? No new game types, no new classes (some have changed), a few new maps.
Despite this, I will play the shit out of TF2 because it is fun, even if it is the same "fun" I felt 9 years ago. But I think TF2 is more of a testament to style, production values, and design thoroughness than it is to innovation. Or rather, the innovation is more due to the high levels of polish, art direction, and user direction, support and feedback than it is due to a bounty of novel game play elements. Valve does have another winner on their hands, but to be honest I am a little disappointed.

How do I set the game to lowest resolution in 16:10 widescreen?
I only have the following choices:
640*480, 7xx*5xx, 800x600, 1024x768, <something else>
Right now I'm at 640x480 and it won't let me click on 16:10 :/ How does the mode switching work anyway? Do I have to set it to 16:10 after I've gone to a higher resolution?

I hear complaints about the Pyro class being weak in TF2. Sometimes a do feel the same. I get angry and run into enemy territory blazing away, flamethrower sputtering into oblivion. And I thought of something...
What if Pyro had a kamikaze-ish ball of flame attack, where he would burst into flames and run into enemy players causing much damage.
It would be a sight to see.
