Iwata: Wii Sports Sequel 'Not Coming Out Soon'

In an interview with Nintendo president Satoru Iwata posted by Earthbound creator Shigesato Itoi on his website, the Nintendo president revealed a sequel to the popular Wii Sports pack-in title was not in the works. "We're not closing our doors to the possibility of a sequel, but it's definitely not coming out soon," Iwata said. The interview is part of 11 conversations Itoi had with Iwata six months ago after dinner with the president. In the interview, Iwata and Itoi kept saying Nintendo wasn't the type of company to "do the easy," presumably meaning it wouldn't take the simple path. But Iwata says Nintendo really only has the ability to do this because of the remarkable success of the Wii--which has reportedly become the top-selling console worldwide, placing the company back in its pre-PlayStation position of power. "But realistically, I think we can say 'we won't do the easy' because we are currently making profit," Iwata said. "If we were having a hard time, maybe we will chose (sic) the easy, so that we can make profit for certain." Iwata also gives an example of "not doing the easy" by revealing the director of Brain Age and Brain Age 2 was taken off the game to work on the Wii's photo, weather, and news channels rather than develop a third sequel. Itoi began posting the transcripts in late August, with the final interview scheduled to appear on the site Friday.
