This game is not BattleField 2. It has vehicles, guns, classes, and levels are based on terrains that are moderately large. But it plays very differently from the BattleField series. You don't have flags to camp, but rather linear objectives to complete; as such, the game moves on in one direction, you can't sit somewhere. Also, vehicles are fragile because of the unified damage mode; for example, a pistol will do damage to any vehicle. And, more importantly, classes and strategy has a much bigger depth that might not be immediately obvious if you're just looking for a run-and-gun game. If you expect this game to be BF, you'll be disappointed.
This game is not Wolfenstein:Enemy Territory. It has guns, classes, and objectives. But it plays slightly different from W:ET. This is because of the sci-fi setting - it features Stroggs and weapons from a time other than when the MP40 was invented - and because of the way the maps are created; they're larger and often require vehicles to traverse quickly. In its core, this game keeps ET soul, but the plasticity of the game is very, very different. The addition of asymmetric classes and deployables really take thing deeper.
This game is not Quake. It has Quake in the name, and follows the classic Quake setting (as a prequel to Quake 2), but it's not as arcadey as, say, Quake 3. The railgun takes more time to aim and recharge, bunnyhopping is not so easy, and you won't be successfull if you just run around trying to gib people away.
This game is not Counter-Strike. It requires some heavy strategy for a team to succeed. A team with good teamplay and average aim can seriously lock a team with poor teamplay and great aim. There's so much that goes into the meta game I can't even begin to explain here. But believe me it's not just pointing and clicking and following a slightly different path or finding a different crate to sit behind.
This game is not Crysis. It's a team-oriented multiplayer game for 24+ players. Yes, graphics aren't as good as Crysis etc etc. The thing is, after you've played with a game for 20hours on a crowded server, graphics is the thing you're least worried about in a game. The game plays smooth on my old computer, and I'm thankful for that. Adding motion blur or depth of field wouldn't be helping.
The truth is, ET:QW is a great game in itself; personally, I was pleasantly surprised with the overall quality and structure after testing the beta. But if you come to it looking for any of the above mentioned games, you'll be disappointed. The game requires time getting used to it; it's not like you'll sit to play it for the first time and be leading the scoreboard after 30 minutes.
This game carries such an heritage and features that it's impossible for it not to get any kind of flak. It's not supposed to be, say, the direct BF2 killer. If that's what you expected, move on, this is not the game you're looking for.

I've been told VOIP got cut and the game isn't really ET nor Quake. It's taken forever to finally come out too :[
If the demo is fun and the shack can beat TWO WEEKS, I hope we can get some regular shackbattles again like the good ol days.
