EA Takes First Steps Toward Full Team Online Play
by Carlos Bergfeld, Aug 22, 2007 3:31pm PDTFIFA Soccer 08 will allow ten players to football it online with a downloadable feature following the release of the game, EA announced today. Arriving six to eight weeks after the October 9 release of FIFA Soccer 08, Be A Pro: Online Team Play will be available free of charge for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 users. The five-versus-five play will put five players on each team with six AI teammates. The move is the first step toward having full 11-on-11 online play as a downloadable update to FIFA Soccer 08 or future FIFA installments, according to the announcement. How likely will full online team play be for further EA sports franchises such as Madden Football? "I guess it comes down to how well this feature is received by consumers," an EA spokesperson told Shacknews. "I know at EA once one of the franchises comes up with a pretty good idea, we share that kind of information with how we do it, and generally the other games will follow."

custom game with no off sides, cherry pickers, all 11 players crashing the net, no one playing their position...

the same goes for football. who would want to play an entire game as a center or a guard? and what if they didn't know when to pull right or left on a sweep or when to drop back for play action?
i think they should certainly offer the option to gamers, but i don't see it being much fun outside of small groups that are really serious. maybe fifa and madden clans will form up (or maybe they already have? i don't know).
