Evening Reading
by Steve Gibson, Aug 21, 2007 5:00pm PDTWow, so that BioShock demo pretty much hammered this place. We were (and still are) pushing out bandwidth by the gigabit. Exact release times really do suck for websites blowing up. How about just giving us like a few hour window or something next time? So then, for this evening I bring you:
- Flash is going HD with H.264
- MTV/Real/Verizon vs Apple
- Dude did strange stuff
- Skype outage details
- Famous body parts
Daily Filter: Planetside 2, Deadlight
Weekend PC digital deals: strategy-o-rama
38 Studios, Harry Potter Kinect - Shacknews Daily: May 25, 2012
Minecraft for Xbox 360 dev working on 'Adventure' update

It's taking up a ton of room, is really heavy, and I could use the cash I think. I don't know if graphics people (and the really anal retentives) would be willing to pay anything for one of these anymore.

Yeah, yeah I'm late to the party and all but here's your official one-stop thread to discuss all the joy & pain that BioShock is giving you and your fellow Shackers. I'm now going to perform a little routine maintenance here in the latest chatty, so if a BioShock-related thread that you started suddenly disappears, repost it here.
And as always, I ask that you be courteous to your fellow forum-goer and mix in some spoiler tags. ---> o [ ] o <--- For the win!

Then what, may I ask, is this:

I'm sorry, but that sounds like hardware fingerprinting - something I specifically asked about and was told wasn't in the game. So what happens if we hit our hardware limit? We call you guys? For a game?
I really hope theres a proper solution to this or you are going to see an increase in piracy, not a decrease. In fact I can see tons of leigitmate customers now looking for cracks just to remove this check for future installs.

Have you ever had a CPU fail on you randomly? I've never overclocked it or anything. Here's my problem.
My computer just stopped working one day. I stripped it totally bare and only have the CPU, Memory, PSU, and Video Card connected to it. I power it on and my Vidcard/CPU fans start turning. I get the power LED indicator on my motherboard. However, nothing happens. No video signal to my monitor. My RAM doesn't light up (lol yes, I have RAM with LEDs on it).
I went as far as to remove it from the chassis (just in case it's shorting on something) and place it on a cardboard box. I got a new motherboard & a new PSU. I tested my video card and RAM in another computer (they work). The only thing that I haven't tested in another computer is my CPU.
I'm half-tempted to just drive up to CompUSA and buy a new CPU. What do you think the problem is?

A yesterday I mentioned I was buying some Countrywide (lol). This is the company at the center of the shitstorm in the world financial markets. When the market really started melting I made a post about why things were going bad, and how defaults on mortgages in the USA were able to affect the price of stocks in Europe and Asia.
People had written about when to get into the market, and the trick is to not be the guy catching the falling knife, but wait for it to drop, see other people start grabbing, then pick it up.
Buying Countrywide is purely speculative. There is a saying in the market which is "buy on rumor, sell on news." The flip side of this is when news has been out, and digested, and overdigested, this can be a time where there may be value in a stock if it is bad news that beat the stock up. The condition is one called "oversold" and there can be dramatic moves if you can time it right.
So I bought Countrywide around 21.25 and there was also a rumor/story starting to circulate that Berkshire Hathaway might buy the company or maybe a portion of it. Berk is Warren Buffet's holding company, so if he is looking at it, this means that there could be value in the stock, or at least value in the rumor.
I checked the market too late, else I'd have sold my position at $23 this morning and turned an 8% profit overnight. Normally I would prefer to buy and hold, but this company I have a lot of fear and little knowledge about. I was just buying on the mechanism of overdigested and over analyzed bad news. Everyone was speculating that the end of the world was nigh, and whenever someone does that chances are then that the end of the world isn't really nigh and the condition is oversold.
Today the stock just went down down down to the point of my 8% profit turning into a 0.5% loss. I loled, it was just speculation and I didn't feel super good about the position.
Well nice news at 7:14pm, Bank of America just invested $2 billion in Countrywide. Wheee. Stock went up to $26.50 after hours, a gain of 21%.
So now after turning what would be a nice gain over two years in 36 hours, the decision is, cash out of this bitch and go to a strip club or sit back and let it ride. I think overall this will have a very large stimulous in the market tomorrow, as people look around and say, oh my maybe this isn't so bad overall if the worst dog at the center of the firecane is worth pumping $2B into, then maybe we've overdone the selloff.
So I'll put in what's called a "trailing stop" which will let the position coast up, but if it backtracks by a certain percentage or dollar value, it will automatically market sell. It's a way of protecting your downside while still letting there be upside.
To the bold goes the glory, to the victor the spoils.

So I got the game last night and made it to the beginning part where the thing guts some poor bastard and then goes "Is it someone new?" then proceeds to slice the fuck out of the bathysphere.
At that point I screamed and quit the game. I don't think I'll be going back. Perhaps I should have played the demo first. ;[

What is the best non-creative sound card for gaming? I built a nice PC for myself but for some reason I still get sound stuttering issues (especially in 2k games, for some reason). I'm thinking it might be time to jump the creative boat, if there's a better alternative.
PC specs:
Processor: C2D E6700
Motherboard: ASUS P5N32-E SLI
Video: 2 x eVGA 8800 GTX 768MB
Memory: 4GB DDR800 kingston hyperblahblahblah
Hard Drive: WD Raptor 150gb 10kRPM SATA150
Sound Creative X-Fi XtremeGamer :(
OS: Windows XP Pro
I've noticed the stuttering becomes a lot more prominent when I run my games at 2560x1600- Bioshock is a perfect example of this. Civ4 tends to just have problems in the movies, so I turn them off... but in bioshock even in the fricken menu the sound stutters. This really isn't a slow processor... so either there's something wrong with my hardware or developers have gotten really lazy when it comes to preventing their sound threads from being starved. :(
Tonight I will again attempt to fiddle with settings, switch pci slots for the sound card, etc... but if there's a better sound card out there... what is it?

I found it interesting that the whole conquistador thing was actually just a product of the book and never really happened. So in a nutshell, he discovered a way to keep people young from a tree in South America, but the rest was just part of her story. He then lived long enough to grow that tree on top of her grave, buy a space ship and have it moved into it. The one thing that I don't understand is how the ring re-appeared at the end before the supernova since it vanished in the lab.
Great movie though.
