Steam Begins Pre-Loading BioShock (Updated)
by Nick Breckon, Aug 16, 2007 10:03am PDTUpdate: There is no longer a confirmed date for the BioShock PC demo. Original story: Valve today announced that Irrational Games' 2K Boston and 2K Australia's highly anticipated first person shooter BioShock is now available for pre-order on Steam for the price of $49.95 in the US and $54.95 in Europe. Steam users can now begin downloading the game's assets, which will be unlocked and activated on the release date of the retail version: August 21 in North America and August 24 in Europe. The news comes after PC fans were disappointed in the release of an Xbox 360-only demo. Publisher 2K Games then assured the community that a PC demo would be released shortly. Further salt was rubbed into the wounds of eager gamers as certain stores broke the street date, allowing certain individuals--including Shacknews' nefarious, no-good editor Chris Faylor--to purchase copies of BioShock early. For more on BioShock, check out my impressions and Chris Remo's lengthy preview.

bah will see, once I play the pc demo I'll decide which version to get, and I'd certainly love to be able to skip the retail experience but then again if I'm paying the exact same I may as well just Amazon it and have some manuals to play with.

Oh yeah... go BioShock! Can't wait to play... but sadly I think I'm gonna have to go with the 360 version. My PC's getting a bit old :(
It says that it's pre-loading BioShock onto my computer, but I didn't purchase it.
Don't you pre-load stuff after you purchase it?
Or did I just get a free copy?

or else
Let the haters hate, I fucking love Steam, and I love the fact that when I get home from work after all the game stores are closed on Tuesday the game will already be installed and ready to play.

With tax, a UK purchase of Bioshock from Steam is $64.57, which is £32.42. At the moment, I can get the game (in a Tin box, with glossy manual and DVD) from Amazon for £24.99, including shipping.
Something is seriously wrong here - a £7.43 (about $15) premium for using a method which costs the distributor significantly less? I've steamed down many games (including HL2, HL2 : Ep 1, Civ 4 and Darwinia), and I love the experience. But I'm not paying $15 for this "privilege", when it feels more like a large pole in an uncomfortable place.

$49.95 same price as Steam. I've never used D2D so I can't comment on it compared to Steam but I've heard bad things about patching D2D games and the like.

Steam is the best thing to happen to PC gaming since, well, I have no clue, it just kicks ass damnit!
Total $68.69 with tax in Europe. I can go to the store here in Sweden and pick it up for ~$55. That is significant enough for me to skip the steam bit.
I have:
7950GT
C2D 6300
2GB RAM
I want full-out graphics on this with nothing compromised. I saw a notation that a 8800GTX would be needed for that. Nor sure how valid that was, but...
I'd love to have it on Steam though.
