Supposedly Microsoft is moving away from ports and more towards original games, but you can't turn Duke down. This needs to happen. Movie: I want to learn how to blow up shit with my mind.

So it was mentioned you'll be interviewing Mr. Levine again about BioShock. I had a question about the atistic influences used in the game. Now I'm a huge fan of the 30's-40's style of work here, but I am wonder about a particular influence and I haven't seen it brought up yet at all.
I'm going to spoiler my next few sentences for those who haven't played the demo...
So i understand there is a large influence from Ayn Rand in regards to the downfall of a Utopian city much like that of Atlas Shrugged. However the stylistic art approach reminds me that of one of my favorite movies ever, Metropolis. Metropolis being a silent film by Fritz Lang also spoke of a Utopian city that crumbled by the hands of the blue collar work force and the persecution of the higher class...was this film also an influence?

I finished reading The Deed of Paksenarrion, by Elizabeth Moon, over the weekend. Many of you recommended this book because I said I liked fiction with some military elements to it. It is also very highly reviewed on Amazon. After reading it myself, though, I have to say it was lacking in a lot of ways.
I can see why people like the book. It has a strong, likeable female protagonist. She follows the standard hero arc of membership, exile, and triumphant return. It has credible action and fairly good writing.
Still, there's a lot that bugs me. There is no world building here to speak of; most of the people, races, and nations in the book feel like they were arbitrarily plucked from fantasy archetypes. "Oh, I could use some elves in the story, let's add elves. They like forests and magic and stuff." That sort of thing. Many of Paksenarrion's "adventures" (she refers to herself as an "adventurer" at times) play out as if Moon is narrating a Dungeons & Dragons game. The paladin, the mysterious thief, and the doughty fighter go down into the dark dungeon. The thief checks the doors for traps. (The thief guy says, "I'm good with traps," I'm not kidding here.) The paladin senses evil. The fighter hacks at things with his axe. They defeat the evil priest and recover great treasure. Ho hum.
I could go on to complain about internal consistency, cardboard characters, etc. I think that Moon wanted to write a morality tale with elements of female empowerment and "rags to riches" mass appeal. Maybe she thought that a fantasy setting was the best way to accomplish this, but she didn't have the knack for writing convincing fantasy.

So, does this sound familiar to anyone? Don't want to be unconsciously re-writing music that already exists.

That's exactly what we got. This game is absolutely dripping ( like water, get it) with atmosphere. It reminds me so much of SS2 it's not even funny. What a great demo. Everything about it is fantastic.

Now aside from games, any regrets converting to a Mac? Are you happy with your decision? Would you recommend getting one? Do you still have / need a PC around for the odd thing?
I'm thinking of getting an iMac (I really don't do anything that requires a lot of power these days, AND I'm moving into a really small apartment so I figure the iMac is perfect for taking up fuck all space). The other option would be to get a Macbook.
Any ideas / suggestions?

LCD or Plasma?
I plan on getting about a 42" tv, primarily for gaming with the 360, maybe some computer gaming on it with my laptop, and watching HD tv, like sports, HBO (Flight of the Conchords), and movies. I thought I wanted a plasma for sure, but now Im not so sure anymore either :/

I picked it up. I brought it home. I thought.
What the fuck.
Why is every sentence so short. At most they are five. Words, I mean.
It can't be like this.
All the way though?
Yes, indeed it is.
What a bizarre writing style.
I'm going to get a headache.

Hey guys. For those who may or may not be interested. I finished the artworks for the EP release by the band piano bar fight that i've been working on for quite some time now. A few of you liked the other stuff so i though i'd make a wee post.
The first image will be the cover, the next one is the back, and the final image will be a folded inlay mini poster type deal. Let me know what you think, all that needs to be done is finalizing the text on the other side of the inlay and i'm set unless you guys spot something stupid i've done or think of some improvements.
Cheers in advance

One of the noteworthy missions from this past Saturday's ShackTac ArmA session was a simple scenario in which a US platoon is cut off from friendly forces in a small town that is coming under heavy attack by enemy mechanized infantry. The scenario, appropriately titled "Last Breath", was played twice during the session - the first time, with ~60 players, was fought in daylight and lasted about an hour before we were overrun. The second one was played at the tail end of the session, with around 30 players, and lasted only about half that. It also had a twist - we were facing the enemy in a heavy fog at night. Both were epic encounters, and both resulted in some slick footage.
A great aspect of this particular mission is that resident ShackTac scripter Kevb0 made it possible for our engineer squad to deploy sandbag bunkers, walls, mines, and other obstacles prior to the assault commencing. It made for some pretty slick defenses.
The fighting in this scenario is intense. Even with 60 players defending the town, the never-ending onslaught of enemy combatants and vehicles was too much for us to take. Casualties started out light, then grew heavier as the enemy committed more and more troops and vehicles to the fray. By the end of the daytime playthrough there were bodies littering the town, friends and foes mixed together in the chaotic melee. It was epic, as I said.
If you're interested, I'd recommend checking out the second playthrough's Youtube video - it's fairly short, there's some hilarious dialog in it, and the atmosphere of the fight is well-conveyed. The first video is of a more serious nature, since it was earlier in the session and we were all still playing at a higher level. The second one, though, is great for entirely different reasons.

Of course, if you want it to look really slick, download the hires version here: http://dslyecxi.com/videos/aug11_last_breath_night.wmv
The other video is an almost full run of the first playthrough of the mission - you can download it here, I don't have it on GVid yet. Be warned that it's a substantial download.

There are also screens from the session. The first twelve are from the first playthrough of "Last Breath", then the second playthrough is screens 76 through 90.

So yeah, that's ShackTac these days. Haven't been posting too much about it around here lately, but I assume there are a few people who are still interested in the videos and such that result from our gaming.
