New Rockstar Franchise Exclusive to PS3

In a post on the official PlayStation blog, Sony of America director of third party relations Michael Shorrock today revealed that Grand Theft Auto IV developer Rockstar Games is working on a new franchise exclusively for release on the PlayStation 3.

"Rockstar really wanted to make a game that you can truly only do on PS3, harnessing the power of CELL and Blu-ray disc and this deal lets them do just that," Shorrock said in his post. "This is really a win-win situation for both companies."

Shorrock was quick to mention that the unnamed title is not L.A. Noire--the stylish thriller in development by Australian studio Team Bondi and published by Rockstar--but something entirely new. No further details, including a release time frame, were mentioned.

The announcement follows a period of deviation for the traditionally PlayStation-focused company, with Rockstar's Table Tennis appearing only on the Xbox 360--and soon on Wii--along with extra Grand Theft Auto IV (PS3, X360) content planned exclusively for the Xbox 360 version of the game.

Rockstar Games spokesman Hosi Simon last week hinted to Games Radar that the PlayStation 3 version of Grand Theft Auto IV would not receive any exclusive content to rival the planned Xbox 360 episodic downloads.

"I guess if you want the complete experience with the episodes, then yeah, you should buy the 360, I suppose," Simon said. When asked whether the PlayStation 3 version would have any similar content, Simon replied, "Not that I can think of."

read: "Sony paid us to do a PS3 exclusive because it was scared to death that the lack of a GTA exclusive would be the end of the console."

I agree. They need some sort of exclusive that everyone races to. However, I think there are lots of other reasons to stick with the XBOX360 - exclusives won't last forever, and I'm curious to see how BD and the cell processor turn into a better gaming experience.

Seems to me that exclusives benefit the console maker much more than the game developer.

Absolutely. It will sell consoles for those who want the game. I bought a Gamecube for Resident Evil 4. Not that I was an RE fan at all, I hated the previous games, but RE4 was a great game. However, RE4 came to PS2 after, if the deal they struck with Nintendo covered the bills then why the port? Its seen all the time.

I don't think they struck a deal with Nintendo. The game's director was the one who wanted it on GameCube only.

No they had a 3 game RE exclusive agreement with Nintendo. The other games were the RE remake and RE0. They also ported the rest of the games over. Pretty sure Nintendo was trying to shed a little of the "kiddie image" so they went to their pals and got the RE exclusive agreement. Of course Shinji Mikami was very supportive of the GameCube anyway which is why it got Killer 7, Viewtiful Joe, and a couple other games that I can't recall atm.
