MGS4 Video Demonstration Released, Metal Gear Online Announced (Updated)
by Nick Breckon, Jul 24, 2007 1:18pm PDTKonami held its 20th anniversary party for the Metal Gear series last night, with franchise father Hideo Kojima on hand to deliver some key presentations for upcoming games, including the much-anticipated Metal Gear Solid 4, the new Metal Gear Solid Online, and Metal Gear titles for the PSP and mobile devices. Most notably, Metal Gear Solid 4 was shown in playable form during the proceedings, as seen in Kojima's gameplay presentation below:

Kojima began by reiterating that stealth gameplay is still the name of the game in Metal Gear, but illustrated how this will change based on the battlefield setting. As enemies approached Snake on screen, Kojima quickly changed his character's disguise with a statue-esque camouflage, posing as a sculpture while the patrol passed by. Snake can also use a suit that copies the texture of whatever surface he is currently facing, allowing him to blend in with concrete floors and patterned walls like an urban chameleon. Later, a battle erupted between what Kojima reffered to as "country A" and "country B," with advancing militia, exploding artillery shells, and unmanned aerial units diving to attack each other. Exploiting his occupied enemies, Snake moved from building to building, guiding the course of the battle with a liberal usage of RPGs and grenades. And in the heat of battle, apparently even Snake has certain needs. Pulling out a "gentlemen's publication," the player can now sift through in-game pinups--and judging from screenshots, this feature will be included in Kojima's online project as well. Moving on to a game that was revealed last week, Metal Gear Solid Online was presented by Kojima as an up-to-16 player online teamplay experience. Hiding and sneaking is still the focus, with opposing teams attempting to take each other out as quickly as possible within a time limit. According to 1UP the game looks graphically on par with the Metal Gear Solid 4 engine, and features some interesting effects. Teammates pulse visibly every few seconds to alert you to their location, and enemies can scan each other to gain the opposing teams' locations. Respawn menus offer weapons and items to choose from, and apparently some melee combat--at the very least, a semi-scripted ambush attack--is supported. Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence (PS2) contained an online component also named Metal Gear Solid Online, although the service for the game closed on April 2 in North America. A closed beta for the new Metal Gear Solid Online will be starting in Japan next month, but no release date has been announced. Some screenshots of the game were released by Konami. Also announced at the party was Metal Gear Solid 2: Bande Dessinee for the PSP, a digital comic based on Metal Gear Solid 2 (PC, PS2, Xbox). The game will feature voice work from the original cast. Additionally, a 3D mobile version of Metal Gear Solid will be shipping along with a Metal Gear-styled phone from Sony.

Snake seems very mobile and acrobatic. It looks like it'll be a lot of fun diving around a battlefield, rolling for cover, flipping over to shoot some dude on a building while lying on your back then chucking a grenade behind you. As long as it controls well (and all of the other games definitely have once you get comfortable with the controls) then the battles could be very dynamic, cool-looking, and well... fun.
The battlefield setting looks pretty awesome. The environments look decent but the options afforded to you during a huge fight look sweet. You could hang in the back, shoot bad guys from a distance. Or you could sneak behind enemy lines, choke them, stab them, shoot them at point-blank range. Or you could hang out with your allies, use big guns, shoot bad guys as they pop out, and wildly throw grenades as shit blows up all around you.
At the same time, the smaller-scale, stealthier elements really look fun. The camo system, disguises (barrel rolling looks fun and actually practical at time), and CQC things (which I literally never used in MGS3) look fucking great.
Now all I need is a PS3 (which I want), and HDTV (ditto), and for this game to come out.

If they had more games of this caliber I just may, but it seems the only other exclusive game out there is Assassins Creed that tickles my fancy.
What other big titles are coming out? I know theres GTA4 and the new GT, but what else?

also the dynamic camo is a cool idea, i just hope you dont have to switch it like every 5 seconds to be effective, that could get annoying.
the ability to low crawl is pretty hot.
cutscene-only previews are worse than worthless in my book...

On the one hand, I really like the idea of not getting caught up in the war zone setting and taking things too seriously (it's supposed to be a fun game, after all), but somehow the blend presented here strikes me as... off? I think part of it is that the more light-hearted parts didn't strike me as funny, so maybe it's a cultural humor thing.

1. New season of Survivorman on August 10. It's going to be awesome. I wonder if they're going to scale back on Man vs Wild now. Somehow I doubt it because I don't think the general population knows/cares.
2. What is the best TV listings website? I don't mind tvguide.com's layout, but it never ever remembers my cable provider.

Also, did they publicly release the render of Eva that they showed at the event?

I thought that i.e. Gears basically demanded that Marcus can only carry as many weapons as you can realistically place on his body, the old Quake style thing where characters reach for their hip and a new gun just pops up would have looked terribly out of place. I always thought of that as a great example of how visuals DO affect gameplay as they demand better animation, and that in turn demands different controls.

Buying a PS3 for this game. I hope there's an extreme difficulty level like in MGS2 where you fail if you're even spotted. I can see myself playing through once normally then again on that mode.

It needs more blood and gore.

The graphics are beautiful and the environments are really cool. I think it's a fantastic setting for a stealth game, because I'm tired of sneaking through dark alleys. I also like the full camera freedom. I realize MGS3: Substance had it, but I played the original version and fixed cameras suck.
Controls in general seemed cool and it looks like Metal Gear.
Iffy:
Having to visit a menu to change camo is lame. I really wish they could make that more on the fly. Also, I hope the situation where snake acted as the third statue is more of a demonstration of the type of gameplay, not the standard. Every situation in the demo basically required the player to find the one object to hide in and I hope the game isn't a puzzle of "fill in the missing piece" or "find the garbage can".

the atmosphere was awesome, but the MGS gameplay looked so out of place in that location/situation. everything felt like too much a game, controlled chaos in what should be an insane warzone. very predictable stuff, guess they are saving the insanity for the cutscenes.
i must say though, that move when he went prone on the ledge and swung down was hot as fuck.

But why do PS3 exclusives nearly all look like they have 256 levels of dust colour only? Lair, Resistance, this and warhawk all have 'dust' as their main look. THE POWAR OF CELL is to accumulate dust!
