This week: another major EVE heist nets a lucky player between $5000-15000 of real-world cashola, details on an open beta for an upcoming MMO, and a lot of dull, random, post-E3 news.

  • EVE player nets $5000-15000 in major heist

It started with a simple declaration: "I can confirm that I, Flatliner, orchestrated a huge corp theft that I planned for over a year. Which may be ransomed back at sometime. That is all."

The message board post heard round the EVE universe this week served as both the opening and parting shot of what surely amounts to one of the largest heists in gaming history.

EVE player Flatliner (pictured above) apparently managed to grab items worth between 100 and 300 billion in isk from corporation Evolution, the flagship guild within the largest alliance in the game, Band of Brothers. The items reportedly include eight dreadnought capital ships and other lucrative materials, which together amount to $5000-$15000 in real-world value.

Flatliner did indeed clean out several of our hangars," responded Evolution spokesman ProphetGuru. "It was him, he was not hacked, and Evolution is not contesting this. It was a legit theft. Flatliner has been a good friend of ours, and mine, for years. He used this friendship in an attempt to destroy us, for his own reasons. I know not the real reason behind this, and in truth, I don't care. What is done is done."

Flatliner's account was soon banned as a precautionary measure by employees of EVE developer CCP. Confirmation of the heist came with Flatliner's reinstatement: "Due to the size of the heist, the GM team took a look into it to see if there were any violations of the EULA," explained EVE community director Charles "kieron" Dane. "No misconduct was found and any actions taken against the player by CCP were reversed."

Evolution is run as a communistic society, where players donate the vast majority of their in-game earnings to a pooled corporation fund, receiving equal benefits in return. As the crime impacted every player in the corporation, debates have sprung up regarding the nature of corporation theft, with community members arguing for and against the morality of such a drastic robbery.

  • Fury open beta announced for July 27-29

Publisher Gamecock has announced that an open beta for Auran's combat-based MMO Fury will take place next weekend, from Friday to Sunday, July 27-29. Log-in accounts will be issued on a first-come, first-serve basis, with 200,000 slots open for players looking to sneak a peek.

"We had planned our first public event to be a little closer to release, but I've come to realize that once people get two or three games of Fury under their belt, they're hooked," said Auran CEO Tony Hilliam. "So we thought, why not just let them get sucked straight into the action and see for themselves."

For those unfamiliar with the game, Fury is strictly a PVP experience, with players gaining skills and ranks by participating in combat arenas. Like World of Warcraft without the world of Warcraft, Fury is all about action and team strategy, with team of up to 16 players clashing on instanced battlefields. Over 400 skills allow you to customize your character in a truly classless system.

"We love indie developers because they innovate, and sometimes the best way for people to discover more about exciting new games is simply to let them experience it first-hand," added Gamecock's Harry Miller.

To get ready for the event, visit the company's website, grab a beta key, and download the client.
