So I posted earlier about learning to program:

So it seems like the consensus is either C or Perl. Perl and/or Python would directly apply in my job, and while I have dabbled in Perl a bit I've forgotten it all. It was very confusing to me, but I wonder if it wouldn't be better for me to start with something I could apply right away rather than learning C to get the core concepts down. I have a feeling learning C first would probably benefit me in the long run.
What is Ruby all about? It seems like a cool language that would be easier to learn, but i can't tell how well it would apply when I went to learn new languages.

The last one I made had capers, onions and cilantro but I would say it was "ok" at best.

otherwise it takes forever to ask "What exactly does Open Borders accomplish when another leader asks to have them?" when I want the answer postehaste!
Note: I'd RTFM but I bought it over steam lol. $50 for both Civ4 and the pre-bought expansion, Beyond the Sword

Walking into the town where you get swarmed by townspeople, how the fuck do you kill them all? I keep running out of bullets and finding myself unable to fend them off with melee or pick up and reload quick enough to not get whacked. I'm playing the Wii version btw.

Anyone use this before? Apparently it lets you share your iTunes Library with up to 30 friends via streaming. On their site they claim this is 100% legal, but I kind of find that hard to believe:
Yes. Music is streamed friend-to-friend, and only within small, private groups. There are limits to how many friends can be on your Media List and how many listeners can concurrently stream music from your computer. Friends cannot burn remote songs to CDs, transfer them to an iPod or mp3 player, or access them when you are logged off. Links to partner stores let you purchase music you wish to own.
It seems pretty cool though

Now that I think about fast food from the 80's and early 90's, all fast food chains now taste like trash. You have to go to a grill just to get the same stuff they were serving for for double the price. Like Buger King actually had deep fried onion rings instead of this dry, baked/microwaved poop they serve now.. and you'd actually watch them flame-broil the juicy burgers which were served on thick buns with mayo and the juices would run down your elbows when you ate it. BK whoppers these days are like chewing wood chips.

How in the blue fuck are you supposed to get past the cops and helicopters once you've finished helping what's-his-face dispose of a body or whatever?
The second I come out, everything comes at me at once. I have nothing other than creeping dark which is shot instantly upon exiting, so stealth is out of the question. Ammo is low, so you can't shoot out the lights, and even if you could, you still need to avoid the stupid helicopter.
I must be missing some hidden core functionality of the game, because on medium, it should not be this tough. I've been at it for about an hour now and can't get past a side street before being shot to shit.

In the Internet giant’s view of the future, consumers would buy a wireless phone at a store, but instead of being forced to use a specific carrier, they would be free to pick any carrier they wanted. Instead of wireless carriers choosing what software goes on their phones, users would be free to put any software they want on them. Google believes that the cost of voice calls and data connections to the Internet may be partly subsidized by advertisements brought to users by Google’s powerful online advertising machine. There might even be a Google phone.

It's called Prototype (360, PS3) and it's being made by Radical (they made Hulk Ultimate Destruction - which was crazy fun). It's a free roaming game that takes place in New York. There's been some sort of virus outbreak, and you play as some super-badass amnesiac that can do all kinds of crazy shit.
In a nut shell, it looks like what would happen if you mixed Hulk Ultimate Destruction, Crackdown, Messiah, and Assassin's Creed.
The guy you play as:
The prototype is an entity called Alex Mercer. [...] What sets Mercer apart is the disturbing ability to kill and absorb any other person he encounters. [...] As each new person becomes integrated so too do their memories, their abilities and their very appearance.
Two examples of this power include: kill and impersonate a high ranking military officer (get lower ranking soldiers to attack enemies for you, call in air strikes, etc.), kill a helicopter pilot and you suddenly know how to fly a helicopter. Also, the whole story progression seems to be related to this scheme, you know what your victims knew, etc.
Also, the whole movement system sounds like crazy fast parkour (like Assassin's Creed but with a superhuman character), and the combat looks super violent (people getting chopped to bits).
The graphics look about as good as GTA IV or Assassins Creed. I can't post scans, but there is this -> http://www.gameinformer.com/News/Story/200707/N07.0709.1006.14113.htm
Seriously, why can't they have show stuff like this at E3?

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows hits stores on the east coast in an hour-and-a-half, so here's the thread to discuss it all in. Please keep all your posts in this thread, and any separate threads from here on out will be no-penalty nuked with a link to this thread.
For reference, the spoiler tags are "o [ spoilered text goes here ] o" except without the spaces between the letter and the bracket. Posts containing spoilers that don't use tags will be nuked, and deliberately trying to spoil the book for others will merit you some harsh punishment. YTMND.com and Something Awful are already trying to spoil the book, so be careful if visiting those sites.

I found a good little freeware bracket program which completely randomizes the bracket and creates a nifty little graphic, so here it is. Since we're one person short as it stands now one player will get a free pass to the second round.
http://fry.viscidity.com/shackbracket.jpg
Names shown are Xbox Gamertags. I'll post the shackname/gamertags list in reply so people can message their opponent and set up a time.
Home field advantage will be given to the player on "top" in their bracket. If your name is above your opponent's, you get home field advantage, which means Home game, away game, home game (if necessary). In round two it'll be the bottom player. You need to win two out of three nine inning games on medium difficulty against your opponent to win. The winner should send me a message after the contest is decided so I can scratch off their opponent. You cannot play as an All-Star team. Duh.
Round one of the tournament starts tonight at 7pm central and ends on Monday night at 7pm. This gives people a full three days to play a couple of games. If you must forfeit please send me a message so I can mark your opponent as advancing to the next round. But only a Giant Faggot would actually forfeit considering you have THREE FULL FUCKING DAYS TO PLAY AN HOUR'S OR SO.
Anyway, if you'd like to fill the one open slot just post up. Otherwise everybody should know exactly who they are playing so you should send them a message to get things rolling.
Also I may not be able to play in this tournament if the Pirates beat the Astros due to me fucking killing myself.

Anyway, I was both pleasantly surprised and disappointed at the same time. I liked the story and the style of the game--lots of personality and fantastic artwork. The animation is still entertaining after all these years, which is really awesome.
I did not, however, care for the micro-management heavy gameplay. For a game that's supposed to involve "strategy", way too much emphasis is placed on special abilities. To be effective, you really need to be babysitting your Ghosts and Science Vessels to be locking down and shielding units. While the concept is cool, the execution is just annoying. 10 things are happening on screen simultaneously, and you're expected to pick your special units out and tell them what to shoot? Come on guys, would it be that difficult to have them intelligently auto-target their special abilities?
Now, I know the hardcore people want that extra degree of control and they don't want the game to "play itself," but I think I prefer a game that's more about putting your units in the right place at the right time, and less about ninja-managing them.
Too bad I don't like Supreme Commander, either, because it takes too long to play a mission. Otherwise, that's a great RTS game. Maybe RTS just isn't for me :(
