Q3Tourney Strategy
by Steve Gibson, Jul 20, 1999 3:11pm PDTOxygen Tank has posted a new Q3Test tourney map DM guide for those of you looking for a few tips on how to master the latest DM map in Q3Test which will be played at the upcoming QuakeCon event. Gotta say I completely disagree with the author on weapon choice though, to rank the shaft 3rd behind the SSG is just crazy. I'll get some demos out there to prove it. :)
Chatty: Diablo III, Dragon's Dogma
FileShack: Unity of Command, Skyjacker
Daily Filter: Planetside 2, Deadlight

I thought the shaft kind of sucked too until I played 1on1 online the other nite against some guy named shit4rail who said he was someone that people might know from the QW scene ... anyway I was on the server for an hour or so and no one could beat him .. he used the shaft more than anyone i\'ve ever seen in Q3 and completely opened my eyes as to its power... I would say that in a 1on1 situation on the tourney map the shaft is the most effective weapon 75% of the time
When i wrote the guide, i tried to aim it at the majority of the readers. Of course the shaft is more powerful, just look at the stats:
8 points every 33 msec makes it more powerful than the plasma rifle.
But, in my expierence, playing on the net at a 28.8 connect, the weapon loses some effectiveness. Quake is a fast paced game, and that means reaction time is key. Look at how much area the shotgun spread and splash damage of the rocketlauncher cover versus the one point that the lightning gun does. If you\'ve got a high ping, like most of us, the ability to keep your crosshair on an opponent becomes increasingly more difficult.
On the other hand, I\'ve got a LAN at home and so I\'ve seen what the shaft can do with good aim and a low ping. If you have access to a cable or T-1, then whip the shaft out more often. But as for the guide, i stand behind my rankings as being more effective given the average player\'s connection.
i apoligize for any typos.
