Supreme Commander Expands with Standalone Forged Alliance
by Chris Remo, Jun 28, 2007 2:59am PDTSupreme Commander developer Gas Powered Games is producing a new expansion pack to its impressively large-scale PC real-time strategy game. Again designed by Supreme Commander creator and Gas Powered founder Chris Taylor, Supreme Commander: Forged Alliance will add a new playable faction (a "mysterious" one, as today's announcement notes), a total of over 100 new units, and a single-player campaign set in the aftermath of the first game's Infinite War. "Supreme Commander: Forged Alliance is not only the continuation of the epic story that is unfolding inside the game's universe, it is the continuation of our goal to move the bar for RTS gaming even higher than ever," said Taylor. Total Annihilation, the designer's 1997 RTS developed by Cavedog Entertainment, was widely praised for its intricacy and focus on overarching strategy; Supreme Commander is frequently named the spiritual successor to that game. THQ senior marketing VP Bob Aniello echoed Taylor's comments. "Supreme Commander raised the standard for scope and scale in the RTS genre and is one of the highest rated strategy games of all time," he said. "Supreme Commander: Forged Alliance is pushing the boundaries yet again promising an exciting new chapter to fans worldwide." Though compatible as an expansion pack with the standard Supreme Commander game, Forged Alliance will also function as a standalone title. THQ plans to ship the game for PC this November.

Seriously, the only considerations I have when choosing sides is what the T4 units are like, and what upgrades are available to the ACU and sACUs, otherwise, the different factions are basically identical. People who are really into the game and do a lot of early rushing might be able to tell you the difference between various T1 units on each side, but I don't have that much experience with the game.
But I'm such a whore for the experimentals. If this new faction has some sweet huge weapons platform, that'll be enough for me to get it.
