BioWare's in-development massively multiplayer game, announced last year, is planned to release in 2009, reports business technology publication InformationWeek. The game is being produced by BioWare at its Edmonton, Alberta, Canada and Austin Texas offices, with BioWare Austin leading development. No concrete gameplay or setting details have been divulged regarding the game, though technical director Bill Dalton spoke on some of the game's technical goals for world responsiveness. Using technology licensed from StreamBase in a deal announced this April, BioWare plans to "monitor and maintain the status of all players" in order to aggressively combat malicious behavior or the exploitation of bugs on the part of players. The StreamBase technology will also allow for the game's environment to respond to player action on a large scale, suggesting that BioWare might have large-scale interactions between the players and the world in the works. BioWare has yet to announce target platforms for its MMO.

  • I don't think this is Kotor.

First of all, Star Wars Galaxies failed., and probably scared many casual-gaming Star Wars fans from trying out any more MMOs with Star Wars in the title.

Second, Bioware is making Mass Effect and MS is going to market the hell out of it. It's also intended to be a trilogy. I doubt Bioware wants to make two games that are so similar at the same time, even if they are being made at different studios.

Lastly, Bioware has explicitly stated that they want to get away from doing licensed games. And who can blame them? They're one of the best-selling western RPG makers in the industry, probably even more successful than Bethesda, and they just got bought and have tons of capital to throw around. It's all new IPs for them from now on.
