Company of Heroes DirectX 10 Patch Released (Updated)
by Maarten Goldstein, May 31, 2007 2:12pm PDTRelic has issued a new Company of Heroes patch, updating version 1.6.1 of the critically acclaimed World War 2 strategy game to version 1.7.0. The 13mb update offers a number of gameplay tweaks and bug fixes, but the main attraction is DirectX 10 support for Windows Vista users. According to publisher THQ, DX10 support should result in improvements to model and map details, lighting, shadows, and overall image quality. Today's patch makes Company of Heroes the first retail game with DirectX 10 support. Update: NVidia has released new 32-bit and 64-bit Vista beta drivers for the GeForce 8x00 range of videocards, which are required for new effects to show up.

I can see why the previous comparison shot in this thread was chosen: it's one of the more drastic changes in the video. The rest are kinda... Meh.

You NEED to get the latest BETA Nvidia drivers for your 8xxx series card if you're going to use DX10 with this patch. There's a bug in the drivers that makes the effects NOT show up if you're on 158.18.

Like every shot Relic releases of CoH, they choose to make it look like an ugly FPS instead of a beautiful RTS. Why they do this, I cannot understand.
Other than that, DX10 appears to make games brighter.
It would be nice if somebody would take some comparison shots of actual gameplay situations so that I could see if there are any benefits I can't already do by tweaking brightess settings in my drivers.
