Free Steam Games For ATI Radeon Owners

Valve has announced that effective immediately, ATI Radeon owners can download a free copy of Half-Life 2: Lost Coast and Half-Life 2: Deathmatch through Steam. The software will automatically confirm the presence of ATI Radeon hardware and offer access to the two games. In related news, Steam will be included with the ATI Catalyst driver and software suit until early 2008 and ATI Radeon HD 2900 XT owners will, upon release, receive Team Fortress 2, Portal, and Half-Life 2: Episode Two through Valve's content delivery application.

I wonder how it checks for the presence of the card. If it just looks at the device name, then you can just modify the INF file and you'd be in. I'm guessing it's something more sophisticated.

pretty cool that you get those games...too bad the cards were such a bust.

also boo on bloating driver packages further, that is seriously just not necessary. at least steam is a small app but still come on, when will these guys learn that doing this always causes issues one way or another.

I just created a steam account on my computer that has a Radeon X300.

According to the Steam agreement.. it says you I will have access to the free games on ANY computer as long as I log in with the account I just created....

So... it seems that as long as you have one computer that has a Radeon card, you can install it on any other computer you have... even if it doesn't have a Radeon card...

Does this mean that you could create an account using somebody elses computer that has a Radeon card.. and then use it on your computer that doesn't have a Radeon card..... looks exactly like that according to the terms.
