Harmonix Prez Donates to Fan Site
by Nick Breckon, May 25, 2007 2:00pm PDTIn a heartwarming token of thanks to his fans, Harmonix president Alex Rigopulos has donated $2,000 to Scorehero.com, a website dedicated to the Harmonix-created Guitar Hero franchise. Scorehero allows users to upload and compare scores for the popular Guitar Hero series of musical games. The owner of the popular site had set a target of $10,000 to be raised for new hardware and related costs, anticipating a heavy burden following the release of the next game in the series. Guitar Hero 3 is being developed by Neversoft Entertainment, and is due out in stores this fall. "Hey everyone, I just kicked in a big donation on behalf of the whole crew here at Harmonix. You guys are awesome!" Rigpolus posted on the website's message board. Shortly after his donation, the goal of $10,000 had been met and exceeded. A few other Harmonix developers also appear to have contributed to the fund. The gesture is all the more poignant considering the Guitar Hero franchise is no longer under development by Harmonix. Following a buy-out of Harmonix by MTV Networks, Activision took control of the franchise via the purchase of Guitar Hero publisher RedOctane, handing the development duties to Neversoft. Harmonix is currently working on its next music-based game, Rock Band.

A couple months later the game was canned because it didn't met the necessary success during beta, and because word of mouth had been underwhelming...
Ah... "what if..."
The only good part is that since the game disappeared trafic dropped for the site (and so did the bandwith costs) and it is still around.
