PS3 Firmware Update Detailed, Adds DVD and PS2 Upscaling (Updated)
by Chris Faylor, May 23, 2007 8:53am PDTSony Computer Entertainment Europe today issued details on the PlayStation 3's next firmware update, which will be available for download beginning tomorrow, May 24. With the version 1.80 update, the PS3 will be able to upscale DVDs as well as PlayStation and PlayStation 2 games as high as 1080p, providing greater detail and picture quality on high definition displays. Due to legal restrictions, DVD upscaling will only be supported with the use of an HDMI connection. Shacknews has contacted Sony to see if similar restrictions apply to the upscaling of PlayStation and PlayStation 2 games, though it is assumed the system will output the enhanced picture of backwards compatible games through either a component or HDMI connection. Also added in version 1.80 is the capability for the PS3 to stream media from any DLNA3-compatible devices connected to a local network, along with option for the system to print photos through select Epson printers. Lastly, version 1.80 updates the PS3's support of the PSP's Remote Play functionality to work across the internet, allowing PSP and PS3 users access to certain functions of the PS3 from any internet hotspot. The full scope of the access is currently unknown, and this functionality will require the PSP to be running the as-yet-unreleased 3.50 firmware, said to be available by the end of May. Update: SCEA has confirmed to Shacknews that PlayStation and PlayStation 2 games can be upscaled using either a component or HDMI connection.

On a side note, why does MS only release 2 or so updates a year for the 360? I think releasing smaller, but more frequent updates will be better. (bring on the browser!)

thats a must if you use the PS3 as a DVD player with kids around (DVDs tend to get terribly scratched real fast... so backups are a necessity)

Now I just need to get a 1080p hdtv...
Folks, one of the positive trade-offs to SCE dropping PS2 hardware in the Euro box for software emulation was that games could be upscaled. If you're in the US or imported a US box, I wouldn't go around partying about upscaled PS2 games just yet. In fact, the prettyness of upscaled PS2 games is why many are afraid that Sony's going to issue a firmware update that will disable the PS2 hardware in US boxes and reduce BC from 99% of titles to 0.99% of titles, if you get my drift.
We knew about DVD upscaling, Phil Harrison promised it in a magazine interview months ago. However, as someone who owns no PS3 games and uses my PS3 to play the same titles (many of which are small niche games) from PS2 along with the extra built-in features, well, this is an update I've been nervous about for a while.
I'm going to hold an eye of skepticism, and at least check blogs and boards for comments before I upgrade to see how this affects American boxes. I really don't want to lose my PS2 guts.

Guess I should import a PS3 before they gimp the US version too or something. :(
