CMP Gets its PC Game On
by Chris Faylor, May 22, 2007 1:43pm PDTCMP Technology's Game Developers Conference today announced the formation of PC Game On, a consumer event centered around PC gaming. Sponsored by hardware manufacturer Dell and subsidiary Alienware, the show will highlight new and upcoming PC games, as well as tournaments and informative GDC-style conferences. Scheduled to occur at the Austin Convention Center on September 8 and 9, the new event takes place immediately after the Austin Game Developers Conference and Gamer Career. "PC Game On celebrates PC gaming as the crucible of innovation in the industry, the place where most game developers get their start, and the driver of digital distribution, MMOs, and virtual worlds," said CMP Game Group director Katherine Shoback. "Considering media attention of late has focused solely on console wars, PC deserves its place in the sun." "There is incredible innovation happening in the PC gaming industry, including great technology enhancements on Dell XPS and Alienware systems, as well as unbelievable advances in game development," explained Dell game marketing director Susan Kittleson. "To be able to provide the attendees real-time access to high performance gaming rigs and the hottest PC games is an exciting challenge that will underscore the commitment that is building in the digital gaming industry, and in particular PC gaming." Tickets for PC Game On will be $25 in advance and $30 at the door. More information will eventually be made available through the official site.

They were talking to nVidia's digital content manager. His job is to assist the developers from suggestions in next generations of hardware to helping them do what they want to do. Some of the things he said:
"... NVIDIA has a lot of confidence in the rest of the PC ecosystem, and that he thinks not only things like CPU will keep pushing forward but also technology like LCDs ... meaning 1080p will likely get left well behind"
"... there's a lot of marketing efforts coming down the pipe from companies like Dell as they realize games are going to help them push purchases past cheap PCs"
Regarding new PC games and what not:
"I can't give you titles or numbers, but there is an underlaying reason for that confidence, because the number of titles we're working with internally is a lot more than I worked on a couple of years ago. I mean, we're testing so many more games, [and] we're supporting a lot more new developers"
Sounds logical from nVidia's point of view. I don't know how much money they make from each console sale, for consoles that use their GPUs, but they definitely make more from top end cards. Unless of course they get extra revenue some other way from console that I dont' know of.
